I'm really curious as to how some people manage to get names that are filtered--i.e. names that give an instantaneous "That name is unavailable" response. The filtered names are always varying degrees of inappropriate (from "White" to the N word), trademarked ("Wolverine"), or pronouns (country names).
A few examples off of the top of my head are the names "Gambit", "Subzero", and "Sony". If you look them up on Armory, they only appear once or twice. When you try to make a new character with those names, you will get a "That name is unavailable" message that takes no querying time, meaning the name is blocked on client side.
There must be a loophole for getting those kinds of names. The single "Subzero" character is a Death Knight, so it can't be that they were obtained pre-BC. The only loopholes I can think of are these:
1) GM's that forgot to check the filter when doing a manual name change.
2) Modified WoW client with filtered names removed.
3) Modifying packets that are sent to the server when creating a new character.
Does anyone have any insight?
