YAY or NAY?
Personally I find it a decent tool to gauge gear very easily, but it's abused to hell in terms of Gear>Skill.
I also think that Skill + Time = Gear, but then again Time = Gear.

It's extremely abused at my server, and it's often discussed in the trade channel. I think it's both good and bad, but I still think Skill>Gear. It's easy to get good gear anyways.
Abra su mente a la realidad.
Do NOT contact me about trading section stuff. Contact a section MOD instead.
I believe it is a good tool. I just do not lke the way it is used on many servers. My druid has a 4.2k GS (the addon, not wow heroes) and I pull 7k dps.
I find gear score absurd (but also because I don't use it I can't judge very well).
I prefer to armory people to see what TYPE of gear they have rather than iLvl+gem+enchant score. This shows more often than not shows me if they got it from raiding or badges or a mix (mix isn't bad).
Also, I despise people who always go on and on about gear score so I used to always use that Gearscore Disconnect script that was posted awhile back (but now patched [/sigh].
Don't like gearscore. These days any retard can get full t9 and have a high gearscore while other people who might've gotten world first on ulduar bosses and are leet might still be running about in full t8.5 and have a lower gearscore.
Gearscore is a great start to forming a raid (or safety net), but as stated before, you cannot solely rely on this addon. It's also helpful to see who in your guild is generally geared and try and catch people up.
I might just be old fashioned however I prefer the good ole' armory, however it does have it's uses.
I'd say you need both. :P With 1.5k spellpower it doesn't matter how much skill you have, you won't top any DMG meters. And if you've 3k+ spellpower and don't know how to play your class, well you're screwed aswell.
Also, GearScore is indeed abused.
Bazinga!
In my opinion, time also = skill. You learn to play your class with time unless you're an idiot.
In addition, people with gearscores over 5.6k are more than likely in a high-end guild. High end guild = you probably know how to play your class.
So yes, gearscore is often an indicator of your skill.
GearScore is the new ******ry in WoW, just like achievements imo
The output of your gear is limited by your skill.
But the output of your skill is also limited by your gear.
I dislike Gearscore being abused so much, but it is extremely helpful on servers such as mine where pugging seems to happen more than guild raids.
When I lead PuGs I do work off gearscore (I usually still armory the tanks and healers). But I tend to inspect everyone and am very strict so if someones dps is slacking badly I tell them to pick it up. If they can't/don't I replace them no biggy.
nay
just because my shamn gs is 4.3k dosnt mean im bad. raided as a holy pally for years. plus i can out heal 5.3k+ gs healers.
earlier people asked achievements and people began to fake them, now you can also fool gs addon and it won't be able to calculate your gs. gs is a good thing in good hands imo
You can accumulate a pretty good gear score via heroics and badges. That takes no skill. I keep getting stuck with hunters in my daily random who melee mobs, do 800 DPS, and have an average ilvl of 232. You can normally look at the retarded choice of gemming and enchants and get a better idea of their suckiness than by gearscoring them.
