I wouldn't be so quick to defend your country's copyright laws. Whilst I agree that laws to protect intellectual property rights are needed, there are some laws in your country that at the very least raise a few eyebrows.

The DMCA contains a number controversial or ambiguous sections regarding reverse engineering that cause issues for people like myself. Then there's also the issue of contradictory common/case law regarding issues such as the enforcability of EULAs and other grey areas.

Sure, enforcing copyright is great (and necessary), but the system as it stands is far from perfect.

Oh, you're right, but in regards to shutting down huge private servers, I believe it is fair and just (as you probably do as well).

However, I must profess that I am not a programmer and know absolutely nothing of programming, and private servers/emulation/reverse engineering in general. I also am not an expert with copyright laws; copyright lawyers are. My father is a criminal lawyer and he does not know that much about it either. You obviously have much more experience with me in the field of private servers (and the DMCA).

I actually looked into some reverse engineering-related things though, and I agree, even with my inexperienced eyes, that the law needs to recognize what is and isn't malicious in a more definite way.

People who actually play on private servers often, and would be upset to see them go, 90% of the time don't even play retail servers anyway. Or, if they did, it was only for a short period of time.

There would be very little money loss if a bunch of private server players got together and said "WE'RE LEAVING!111!!!!111".
