A live-action Warcraft motion picture is under development.

In a May 9, 2006 press release, Blizzard Entertainment and Legendary Pictures (makers of Batman Begins and 300) announced that they will develop a live-action film set in the Warcraft universe. Legendary Pictures has acquired the movie rights for the game universe, and both companies are now focused on translating the Warcraft experience to the big screen. Read more about it in the press release.[1]

The live-action film is set for release in 2009.[2]

    DIRECTOR -

According to Legendary Pictures Chief Creative Officer Jon Jashni at BlizzCon '07, no director has yet been attached to this movie.[2]..

    PLOT -

The film was originally set in the era of Warcraft: Orcs and Humans. This was scrapped however, as there were notions that it would be too similar to Lord of the Rings and that Warcraft had reached its current level of popularity through its MMO, rather than the previous RTS games.[4]

As such, the movie is set one year before World of Warcraft and will primarily told from the Alliance's POV, though Metzen says his heart lies with the Horde. Characters such as Cairne Bloodhoof, Thrall and Bolvar Fordragon are likely to make appearances. Arthas is unlikely to appear.[4] The main character is set to be a new hero described as a "kick-ass Human" [5]. Interestingly enough, the film is described as the "first film," raising obvious possibilities as to future installments.

Concept art of Teldrassil was released in relation to the film, confirming at least some of the film takes place in Darnassus.

You can propose which plots you would like to see at Warcraft Movie Screenplay.

    RATING -

"We're definitely not going to make a G or a PG version of this. It's not PillowfightCraft." -- Chris Metzen[2]

    Film adaptation

In May 2006, production company Legendary Pictures acquired film rights to adapt Warcraft for the big screen with the game's publisher, Blizzard Entertainment. Blizzard had originally considered hiring a scribe for the film adaptation before teaming up with Legendary Pictures.[2] The companies plan to create a film that would not follow one specific Warcraft games' storyline, but would still take place in the fantasy universe.[3] According to Blizzard's Chief Operating Officer Paul Sams, the film's budget would be over $100 million.[4]

In June 2007, Legendary Pictures chairman Thomas Tull said that the studio was working closely with Blizzard's designers and writers to adapt World of Warcraft. Tull explained the desire to have a good story for the film adaptation, "I think some of the stuff that makes a game translate well... if there's a lore, if there's a road and story and a world that's been created, and characters that are interesting in a way that's more than just point and shoot."[5] World of Warcraft's lead designer Rob Pardo expressed interest in being able to adapt the intellectual property of World of Warcraft to the appropriate medium of the film. He also added that the designers were collaborating with Legendary Pictures on story and script development.[6]

In August 2007, at BlizzCon, it was unveiled that the film will aim for a projected 2009 release. It was also revealed that the movie will take place from an Alliance perspective and will be geared towards a PG-13 audience, with a storyline set one year before the beginning of the World of Warcraft storyline. Also revealed was the 100 million dollar budget. As of this time no director or cast are yet associated with its development. Thomas Tull stated that, "It’s not so much a quest movie. It’s more of a war movie."[7]

    Blizzplanet Info -

WCRadio put up the video of the Legendary Pictures Panel held at Blizzcon 2007, where Chris Metzen, Paul Sams and Thomas Tull (Legendary Pictures Chairman) discussed details of the Film with fans. The video lasts 43 minutes, and it is very amusing, humorous and informative. At the end you will see a concept art that shows Teldrassil. If that is a hint of things to see, we will probably see Darnassus city and of course Tyrande Whisperwind.

It will be a live action film portraying a war conflict between the Alliance and the Horde. The timeframe is set to a year before the events of the MMORPG. The main character will be a new heroe described to be kick-ass Human. Most of the story is told from the point of view of the Alliance, but there will be Horde elements with Thrall making it to the big screen. Thomas Tull hinted they want to make the first film a masterpiece that will make fans be excited of seeing what we we see everyday in the MMO come to live -- and by saying "first film" basically let the cat out that they envision more films based on World of Warcraft.

    NEW DETAILS -

August 4, 2007 - Blizzard has been going to Hollywood for years to pitch movies, but kept getting turned away with the notion that fantasy pictures just wouldn't work. Blizzard's Chief Operating Officer Paul Sams said as much during a panel today at BlizzCon 2007. That was, until they met up with Legendary Pictures, the studio that produced Batman Begins and 300. Chris Metzen, Blizzard's VP of Creative Development, and Thomas Tull, head of Legendary Pictures, were also on stage to provide additional insights.

As of now, the film is set for a 2009 release. The budget is upwards of 100 million USD, and it will be a live action film, likely with a mix of digital effects. To what extent such effect will be used depends largely on the director, who has yet to be named. Legendary and Blizzard are hoping to find someone of Zach Snyder caliber, the man who directed 300. No actors were named, something that will also have to wait until a director is chosen.

Metzen went on to describe the story, though very vaguely. Originally Blizzard wanted it to be set in the universe of the first RTS Warcraft game with a basic Orcs versus Humans storyline. That was scrapped because of notions that it may be too similar to Lord of the Rings, and that Blizzard felt the Warcraft name has reached its current level of popularity with its MMO, World of Warcraft, as opposed to the RTS games from before, which include three Warcraft titles and various expansion packs. As it stands, the story will incorporate a series of major events from about one year before World of Warcraft, and will be principally told from the perspective of the Alliance.

An early glimpse of what to expect.
The movie will be two to two and a half hours long, and both Legendary and Blizzard want it to have an epic action kind of feel. Tull pointed out the film would blend elements from other big action titles like Gladiator, 300, and Braveheart. According to Metzen, the movie won't be a journey type of tale, like in Lord of the Rings. Instead, it will focus more on growing tensions between the races of the World of Warcraft universe and eventually culminate with some kind of battle. Characters likely to make an appearance include Bolvar Fordragon, Thrall, and Cairne Bloodhoof. Arthas, a famous character from Warcraft 3, will more than likely not be in the film.

As far as MPAA ratings go, Legendary can't really say what the film will draw, as they still don't have a director, but Metzen was quick to point out, "it's warcraft, it's not pillow-fight craft." At the end of the Q&A session, they briefly showed a storyboard image from the movie, a view at dusk of the mammoth tree, Teldrassil, which will likely serve as a setting in the movie.

    Other Q & A info:

Classes will be in the movie, but can’t give details since still in scripting process, not exactly clear and we don’t know yet, but we want many familiar elements in the movie as possible

What races will be represented? Not very easy to answer considering the timeline we’re talking about, so they are not sure about if the Forsaken have yet joined the Horde But not everyone can be in the spotlight in the first movie anyway

Warcraft has a lot of strong characters, would you consider going back to do another movie on Arthas? I would consider that, sure, but we haven’t talked about what other films might deal with. We have to get the first movie right first before you deal with franchises.

This is based on two or three major moments in the games, so it isn’t radically apart from the continuity, so it really holds together. We want it to taste like the World of Warcraft world. but it’s also really fresh. I understand the fear that you don’t want us to screw up the story, but we will be respectful of the continuity but will hold up as a killer 2 hour movie. It is a little modified.
There’s so much in this world to deal with, so you use that as a jumping off point to tell a kick ass story. They want the players to enjoy the movie experience, if they are too much a slave to the story that won’t be the case. They want to respect the world, but to translate it to the screeen and is great on film.

Nice info, I just hope this isn't an average movie. And the movie has a really "epic" feel.

Know what you mean. many a time as a movie failed for lack of "epic" appeal.

if the scenery is going to look like this consistently then we shouldn't have a problem

looks good but what is going to be the name of the movie, i don't think they will call it "World of Warcraft" or "Warcraft" and i hope they don't because that would be a very lame name for a movie
