Takes 5 minutes to get there from starting point.. but there are cooler places you can see on the way.. like the secret airport (not so secret anymore).

1) Not the highest place
2) I doupt it didnt take ages because you were on private server..
3) You can just use slow fall / similiar spell or item at the spirit healer place, jump down with 100% mount and climb up there

correct me if i'm wrong but i always assumed Northrend was technically part of Azeroth. Which would make the Temple or Storms in Storm Peaks the highest point.
