The city/village/whatnot you're running in is Zul'Gurub, or the stripped down version of it. Basically Blizz programmers copied a part of the public world and added the instrumental parts of Karazhan to it, while keeping the extra things.

Other similar places in 'Outside Kara' are for instance Darkshire and that little village on the foot of the tower itself.

yeah, hardly remarkable at all... you can do the same thing in reverse from ZG... that is access old Deadwind Pass. At least you could in patch 2.3.
