I finally managed to get it to work so that's two of us other than the OP, so this is confirmed.

Its more luck than science. Like the guy says above you need to cancel the buff in the last tenth
of a second. That's accuracy that's really beyond human judgement so you can just have to keep trying it until
you fluke it.

Took me about an hour doing it solid, but it could easily take longer with poor luck.
