This seems to have been hotfixed - both the critters and the rep-less mobs that attack the NPCs at the base camp no longer yield souls.

If you have guild support (which you should have otherwise its pointless to begin the quest) the fastest way to get 1000 souls is farming Precious (10 man) Precious - NPC - World of Warcraft the dog who spawns the zombies, you get credit (souls) from killing them and he spawns them fast and many, just keep Precious alive as much as you can and depending on your gear level you should get around 150-200 untill he wipes you.
Rinse and repeat untill you have 1000.
This will take around 15-20 mins!!!

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure they hotfixed that quest so that respawning mobs and critters don't give credit for the quest. Either that or someone I know is a retard :0

In order to gain credit for 1 soul (1 mob) you need to deal damage to it while equipping Shadowmourne (epic). However, you do not need to deal melee damage with the axe, you just have to deal damage to gain credit.

Yes...

You don't have to even do damage. Any hostile action (even if it does 0 damage, eg, demoralising shout, taunt, anything) will put a debuff with an unlimited duration on the mob. When the mob dies, you get its soul if you're alive (there's an animation of some purple waves flying from the dead mob to your character too)

UPDATE: The adds aren't farmable one run after another. However, they do have a cooldown timer of some sort. I ran a rep run around 11am this morning to test farming out. Once we started the second run, I wasn't getting rep so I left the raid. Then my raid time came around 6pm, everything was giving updates again. It may have to do with reforming raids, im not sure. Someone thats farming these try leaving raid after a clear and then ask the raid for a reinvite and see if that does anything. If not its definitely just a cooldown timer.


So what that means is you can farm kills, however - if your not earning rep, you may want to take breaks. I will be trying to find out what the reset cooldown is next week.

Another thing - adds from Lady Deathwhisper seem farmable - but this would be a less efficient method than farming Precious adds - if thats still working.

Confirmed 10 man Precious farming does NOT provide souls towards quest. Ret paladin in my guild was not getting credit for the zombies the mini-boss spawns.
