I'd like to take a second to tell you a bit about myself before I continue on to the matter at hand.
I'm Johndeere and Aspiring co-owner of what we hope to be a long time World of Warcraft Private server gaming community. Me and my partner Have been long time WoW buddies and have decided to take our WoW experiences to new levels, and with our constant studying and hard work we've opened a Public server, Proven that we Offer Stable service, offer a content rich experience and a very competitive community! Just a little tip...

a VAST majority of the players that seek to play private servers are going for the "i want to relive wow" feeling. What this means is that by offering "donations" it can drive a very big part of your community away. By offering donation items, even if its just t7 or t8 or simple gear like that, it will turn allot of people off. The more you can promote your server with out donations, are able to keep it up and running with out donations, are able to release gated content with out donations. it will make your community strive for greatness.

I can think of a recent Vanilla server(that cloes due to other reasons) that i played on since beginning JUST for the soul fact they did NOT offer donation services. Sure you can donate to the server but its out of your heart, not to get something in return. Maybe a vanity pet or something like that but not gear.

Figure it this way. If you get enough people on your server through donations, those people are going to do what they please and it will get borring for them fast. OR if they dont get borred and the server lasts for more than 8 months (most servers dont last past 4-5) you will start to get a name for your server and new people will join. Now... most of these people will not donate. Some will how ever. The ones that dont, are running around trying to find groups for instances or try to PVP and either never get invited because they dont have a high enough gearscore, therefor not being able to join groups to get a said higher gearscore. Now for PVP? Do you really wnat some one running around in full wrathfull while the new guys on the server are getting facerolled by him? Which in turns drives down the population because the new players dont continue playing, and your old players that did donate in the beginning are left to battle the same people over and over and over an eventually quit due to no new players on the server.

Go look around at server.s Maybe you have even played on them yourself. Didnt you see this happening?

So with all that said... IMO do not make a donation system. If you have gotten this far with out having donations, you surely do not need them to run a server. And if you have a halfway decent computer, you can run your server and get up to around 50-60 players online with out your server lagging. If its your OWN core.. then you can fine tune it to handle more players. As for server hosting? You can find a REALLY cheap server somewere in germany or sweden that can host for like $15/month for a nice connection that can allow up to 200 people. If your server gets anywere close to that, than you can ask your community.. polity.. if any one is able to help donate to keep the server online. And im sure you will have 1 player that can get ahold of mommy or daddys credit card and give you some money...

But when it all boils down to it.. servers that have donations on them, most of the time fail. The only reasons you see these huge servers that are still running is because the ammount of players on the server exceeds the amount of server space that is available for said players to connect, so evidently, some one will donate to increase the server population..

Just think about it befor you make donation items, or the ability to buy gear for your character..
