Start a HIGH POPULATION Server
Hello I want to start a WoW server later this month or start june. I have resources to do something good i think and some knowledge whit WoW private servers , i hosted some when i was younger and active player.
I have this questions to help me understand beter what im getting into:
1) What is the current best emulator closest to blizzard latest version?
2) How hard is to fix bugs or release newest version as blizzard releases them also? I am not a coder or anything i will rely on 1 or more persons working.
3) What specifications for server will I need to host up to 1K or more persons without issues? Also can the emulator support this many people?
4) Best place to rent high end servers for gaming in Europe? Preferable France.
5) Best and fastest way to promote server? I have a budget for it so will try keep my announce on top of list.
That's all I can think of now thx for response, also if have good knowledge in developing wow servers PM would like to talk more maybe hire to work for my server. Thx

1) It depends on the expansion you wish to support.
2) Depends on emulator again, although I could assume you want to make a WOD server and to release bug fixes etc actively you'd rather have 10 developers than 1... AT LEAST for a high pop server.
3) Different emulators support different amounts of people :-) But yes, it is possible with 1-2k people and with some emulators up to 5k.
4) I like to use OVH
5) Forums, toplists etc.
EDIT: It's weird that you say you have a "good knowledge in developing wow servers" when you aren't sure how many people an emulator can support and which one to choose.

Making, keeping and working on a private server is a lot of work, and especially if you don't have a lot of knowledge or a team who knows a lot. Sounds to me like you don't from what I've read. Why do you want to start a server with the hopes of reaching a 1000 players? It's going to require a lot of expertise, time and money and it isn't just something anyone can do. You don't seem to have taken much into consideration of why you want to do this or have thought out your options even. But you do you.

Thank you for clear answer. Last time i created a wow server was 5 years ago had some people joining it was fun but all was ''home made''. Now i have the resources and time to make it in a more professional way and how i would like it to be.
I think my questions was not too clear since i am not up to date whit what is going on now so:
1) What is the latest expansion that is stable to use for a server? I want to try to keep as close to blizz as possible
2) What is the most developed emulator or easy to work whit?
Q3 4 and 5 very good answers thanks again!

They are all stable (uptime) but lots of broken quests, functions, spells. Nostalrius did a shitload of work to get their server to be like it was back in the days so not even vanilla is top notch.
If you go over to a repack thread you will probably see something like:
Paladin 99%
Warrior 98%
Raids 91%
There is no statistics for working shit in emulation, either its working or it's not, 1, or 0. The problem is finding information about spell scaling and making it work with buffs, debuffs, talents, items and so on. I played a lot of pvp on retail during burning crusade and there are still issues with TBC emulators but you get used to it.
Go with whatever expansion you like, contribute to an open source emulator, if you manage to get big you need to get security. We got taken down by a larger server, the host got messed up and we quit.
