    Making the right choices?

    Hi guys
Recently I decided with some friends to start up a private server for approx 20 people we all know.

The general idea is to have scripted instances we can run together and some malls etc., although I would like to be able to customize everything myself to make it fit our small community.

Question is what emulator is the best for this purpose, and if a repack is better for us in this case? Cons and pros?

What patches are generally good to have if I chose not to use a repack?

I've put up a few servers in the past for fun, but havent worked on anything for a couple of years now. I can do basic LUA and have a fairly good understanding of how the databases work.

    Thanks beforehand

I recommend you to make an ascent/arcemu core, you can start learning some C++ and make your own patches since is more user-friendly than the mangos/trinity ones, also it has LUA, I personally dont like repacks too much unless is for testing purposes.

The only expansion that I really liked was the TBC and for that ,aside Oregon ( I didnt liked too much the mangos/trinity core code) the best core I found was Arcemu rev 1562 with a mixed WhyDB/NCDB database.

arcemu is very buggy and kinda lame atm i donot recommend it at all!!! it supports lua script is its only good thing

repacks got a register page yes and i perfer mangos where you compile it yourself as you can do more with it using c++

any core out there donot have all instances scripted and prolly never will but you choose c++ or lua... repacks of mangos cannont have scripts added after compile aka repacks!!!

best arcemu repack i have found is at panex-gaming.com

best mangos repack just search here for quantra's repack but i warn you

it is better to compile your own and you can find a tutorial at getmangos.com in wiki and for arcemu its at arcemu.org

In my opinion, if you're looking to add some malls and also want scripted instances, the best way to go is to compile trinitycore.
They have the most support for features and instances out of any emulator and, contrary to popular belief are very easy to customize.
If you need any help, feel free to send me a PM

Thank you so much for your feedback- Greatly appreciated! With that said I have a few more questions.

I actually decided to compile arc-emu as my core, but you got me reconsidering when mentioning trinity. How are spells etc. working compared to arc-emu? Is it still possible to code in lua, or is it c++ only?
With our small community it's crucial that I will be able to create custom instances and edit the difficulty in existing ones.
Is it possible to get blizzlike scripts for most instances like Sunwell, Naxx, ICC etc.? I was wondering if any of these are included in any of the cores?

Thank you for your time Sincerely, Corvinius.

Arc-Emu is the best choice. Yes. Arc-Emu is buggy, But bugs can be fixed a whole lot easier than Trinity Core. It is a very good core. It's a lot better than what people take it for.

I started a arcemu server, and once I realized how buggy it was, I decided to switch to trinity. Best choice I ever made.

Well, everyone have his own tastes, Arcemu strong's point is that is more noob friendly and the advantage of having LUA (for the ease of scripting mobs, amongst other things) its really BAD side is being plagued with many often game-breaking's bugs, if you are experienced enough with C++ then is a Mangos/Trinity core what you want. I personally have both of them. Although I like to code more in Arcemu, but everyone now and then I use the Mangos/Trinity core too.

And how is it not comparable to ArcEmu? It's hard to find some dry facts comparing the two.

However, I do not believe my last question, regarding instance scripting, was answered. Are they included in the core or do I have to write everything myself?
I'm not that experienced with C++, and my coder is located elsewhere, so most of the work is on my shoulders.

Arcemu supports LUA so you can begin writing your own scripts and also have Instances scripted in C++ in a separated svn for this, is called Arcscripts, check in their forums the link.

How about the trinity core - Does it have scripted instances like ArcScripts beforehand? I'm really torn on what core to start building on.

I haven't read this thread properly because I hate core arguments.

In answer to your question, the core does include some (pretty much all of them for Trinity) blizzlike scripts for various instances and such. ArcEmu has very few, and most of them were done in Lua. Trinity has almost all of them done in C++. You can also get further scripts from external sources, such as 3rd party coding projects. Unfortunately for all core's if you want the latest instance/raid scripted or whatever you will usually need to do it yourself.

Thanks guys! Those were the kind of answers I was looking for. I'm gonna try my luck with Trinity. Is WhyDB the best DB out there?

I don't think WhyDB is even compatible with Trinity. TDB I think is the best database for Trinity/Mangos, although I'm no expert when it comes to the mangos side of emulation.
