A Question of WHY

I was browsing the tutorial forum and I noticed a reoccurring theme.... "Lets take an already coded "Insert something here" and make it into something else" Example: Take an Orgrimar portal and make it your mall portal or make a npc mount have a different Display ID. Is it really that hard to make a new portal or npc? I don't know how, but my way is the only logical way to do it. Don't laugh at me since I don't know well enough about WoW Servers.

It prevents the original ID from being corrupted in future updates.
For example... The portals on Shattrath/Dalaran are all part of the same ID.
If you are running of Arc-Emu you may want to update your server with the latest rev.
To prevent errors/file corruption, you simply copy the display and generate a new ID for it.
Make sense?

I think I understand. Say I want to create a new portal with the id: 177145 how would I make it an actual portal or a new npc, instead of using a already made one. Just to let you know I compile my servers and use WHYDB.

Just go into your SQL database, find the ID of your portal that you want. (Easily found the ID on WoWhead) Copy the single strand from the table. Paste it, then change the ID number/name.

I think when I did that before I wasn't able to operate it, but this was long ago. I'll try it tomorrow since I'm tired and I have to get sleep for finals. Thanks for your help.

The teleport_coords table can not be added to since the ID's are read from the DBC's or something or other. So basically the reason people tell you to change current portals is because you can't add new teleport locations, you can have an infinite number of gameobjects but you would just be creating a new one that points to the same thing as the other object.

Personally I would always use scripts for things such as this, because then you don't have to change anything that's in there already and you can have as many as you want.
