Where to start for server (Questions & Concerns)

I've been interested in hosting a 3.3.5.a server for quite along time, the direction of retail is just dreadful to continue on any further. Honestly I don't know where to start other than to start by asking what does it take to achieve a promising server.

Setting up a server (guides) with a repack sounds easy & simple enough but what about hosting in general, a goal range of 200 - 1500 players would suffice.

Hosting from home sounds like a terrible idea, anyone would agree to avoid hacks or a dos as much as possible, also other options maybe required to upgrade to a lag-free experience but this will cost more $$$$

Rent a server, is this possible? I don't know of any website that host a WoW private server due to the EULA. If anyone could elaborate some details on this, by all means please.

Are custom made repacks available anywhere? Even for purchase? Does anyone offer tune ups for a price? I'm all for it.

What software or tools should be required to host a private server, is there a list that make things easier to fix or monitor, or perhaps just anything in general I should know about?

The direction of a private server I would like to go would be a Instant level 80 battleground server

My main goal for a private server is to have a balanced, fun, & FAIR gameplay experience for everyone.

There used to be a site which would actually create private servers for you, and then host them for minimal fees, but it basically was a violation of the EULA/TOS. I do not know if they still do it or not, however because of the hosting type, I think you could only have around 20 people on it at a time.

It would be better for you to go all out and get a server, but if you don't know how to set one up, you will need someone to help you. Do consider getting CPanel installed, it will cost you about $20 more a month to have it, but makes managing a server much easier. Expect to have to install phpmyadmin to help you with the database (likely localhost). If you are on a PC, then install Filezilla which will allow you to transfer files even over sftp. You should also expect to install PuTTY (get it and other tools here - WinSCP :: Official Site :: Free SFTP and FTP client for Windows). This will help you to manage commands to your server. The rest should be in documentation for each of the programs.

WARNING: Beware cloud hosts which charge you by the gigabyte for overage fees. One DDOS attack (or advertisement spam), and you will suddenly be looking at a huge monthly cost. There ARE unlimited traffic options out there - take time looking for them. For a domain, host it over at something like GoDaddy, which allows you to point the domains where you want them. This way, if you run into trouble with one host due to the hosted content, you can move it over to a new host, just by redirecting the domain.

For the emu server you choose, look up it's requirements, BEFORE you purchase a vps/server.
