    Has Anyone Been Caught/Banned?

I was just wondering if anyone has been caught and/or banned for playing/hosting their own private server. At first I was under the impression you can't be caught, and then I found out that the servers are literally illegal and that Blizz can probably sense a change in the program folder...

After a hasty Google search, basically all I heard is, "Yes, it's easy to get banned, you WILL get banned" etc etc. I have the private server information on my desktop, but for the next few weeks I'm forced to play on my laptop which doesn't have the software on it. Am I safe? Also, how are people caught? I played briefly on my own private server (just me) with AC Web Ultimate Repack.

    Thanks for any help.

lol blizzard will not catch you running a private server... if they 'sense' the private server on ur pc they are probably violating a lot of stuff too...
90% of the ascent developers and stuff play on official servers to collect data... they even use sniff tools... i know very few that got banned...

    its all a lie really
theres no way they can detect a change unless they are watching all your folders and that
is techinically a virus which is illiegal on there part theres no way to find out unless you get a WoW error and make it say something like "yeah i was playing ChaosCrusade private server and it crashed so fix it for me plx"

So the chances are truly far more slim than I believed? And how do botters get caught? I thought they were caught by Blizz monitoring stuff..

i believe bots are third party programs that are running while u are on Live servers so blizzard is able to run "Warden" and detect these bots on your computer. Most times Blizzard won't catch bots such as Glider tho. And when Blizzard does catch u "botting" it is usually because of suspicious activity in-game, and a GM will pst you and find you to be AFK and killing mobs.

    Here's the difference:
Bots directly affect blizz servers, it creates imbalance and puts unnecessary load on their servers.
Private Servers don't really threaten them; Quite the opposite: It attracts new players to the game.

First, to the original poster, this question has been asked plenty of times before, searching would get you allot of answers.

You mean there is no way they cannot detect a change? Warden pretty
much can scan everything if Blizzard feels like making it.
Its not a virus, its more spyware, and it is NOT Illigal!
Where do you get that bull**** from? Let's take a look at the
    account registration page.
In an attempt to provide all users an equal opportunity to play World of Warcraft game in a ‘cheat free’ environment, please be aware that World of Warcraft monitors the computer that you use to access World of Warcraft for unauthorized third party programs running concurrently with World of Warcraft by performing limited scans of your computer.
By clicking the "accept" box, you acknowledge and accept that Blizzard has the right to per-form the scans. If you do not agree to allow Blizzard to perform the scans, you will not be able to register an account to play World of Warcraft. For more information,

The chances of you getting cought is currently at about 0-1%.
However, if Blizzard decides to go against private servers, its about 200%.

Ok, and when did this discussion have anything with bots to do?
So far, not before your post.

I used a number over 100 to express that if Blizzard wants to kill private servers, its just a few lines in their WoW code, and private servers are down.

It was overdoing it, but overdoing it can often be a good way to express yourself.

I was one of Three Admins (Evolutions) And i was a GM on TrystWoW.

I'll tell you now, Blizzard will rarely ban you for playing on a private server, there's nothing to be gained from baning you. However what blizzard will do is preform scans on your wow folder like normal and look for realmlist change and use that to track down the server and then procced to send an Email to the owner from there Legal Team stating that if the server is not shutdown within aweek of notice they'll proceed to take further action ( We never did close down :P and Blizzard never did go thou with legal action )

bleh BLIZZ CAN NOT take private servers down they tryed with a lot and they only got very few down...mostly becuz admins use donnations or something...
but running a private server only they can not detect in any way.... only if you host it on ur pc and go post ur IP arround everywhere you have a chance they find you lol... and then you can get ingame ban... but if you have a decent private server, no way, they will NOT detect u or close you down

well it is illiegal in some countries, in some not...
But wtf why would blizz care? if they have millions of players and private servers have like 1000-5000 max? (the biggest ones)
And Private servers are good advertisement for wow... how much people go to official servers after they played private servers? TONS!

    grtz
