Newbie Questions (sad I know!)

Heya all! Being new here- one thing that has always interested me is software in general, as well as gaming. The only problem I've had is I just never really knew what people were talking about for the most part. I know my way around a computer and can build and take apart and rebuild computers all day long but when it comes to the software side, I'm rather dumb.

I've tried doing research, and using google, yadda yadda; and have never found the answers I've wanted. Where can one find a clear-cut beginners guide on the basics? Now don't get me wrong- I'm not wanting to use it to "yeah I want to make the best piece of software ever!" I just want to really understand what I'm reading when I'm browsing the website hah!

A few things that I've tried researching, but it literally flew right over my head:

Mouse Hooks (I found a few definitions, but trying to find it simplified was like pulling teeth)
Memory Writing?
