    Umm....WTF indeed.

Windows Vista and 7 both allocate memory based off apps that are used the most, and do so very efficently. Even XP manages it's ram effeciently after a few registry tweaks. Tools like this usually do nothing but give a placebo effect, as there is no way that the program is going to boost performance by more then approx 1-2% (maybe 3 fps gain).

Also, going from 14 fps to 231 fps in Stormwind is possible depending on:
A.) Where in the city you are.
B.) Time of day and city population.
C.) Facing a wall or in a building.

The game isn't even a memory hog unless you're running under 2GB of Ram installed in your system. Even then, a majority of the performance hit will come from CPU and HDD access because of the constant use of Virtual Memory (slower due to HDD access time).

Tools like this are pointless when using a modern OS. If you HAVE to clear your ram, just restart your PC.

Sometimes (and I mean very rarely) a memory cleaning tool is useful while running wow. Specifically when everything is turned up to max and you're lagging out during a 25-man raid. I personally just use rammap from sysinternals (microsoft), which is free, clean, and simple to use. Just load it up, and go to the "Empty" menu -> select all the options, and your in-use memory will go down, WoW will keep only the data it needs to function in ram, and you will see an improvement in FPS. It's not necessarily needed, but sometimes is a nice thing to run when the game seems a bit laggy.

And there is a technical reason why this helps sometimes - WoW tends to put unused data into 'stand-by' mode, which basically means that it's not currently in use, but could be needed at some point in the future - this is normal for any application on Windows. During raids, you tend to stay within the instance and not go anywhere else, yet the game will keep as much data cached in stand-by memory as it can, so loading screens don't take forever when you exit the instance. It's a form of optimization that relies on the user not needing that ram for anything else - if you're on a low memory system, cleaning the ram will help to some degree for the instance at hand, but once you zone out, it'll take a lot longer to reload the data since it has to re-cache it from the MPQ's on the disk.

If you're running the game from an SSD, cleaning the RAM might not show any improvement, since the overhead from running on an SSD is much lower than magnetic disk media. The speed to re-cache the data will be almost negligible.

    So much misinformation here...

Anyone genuinely interested in Windows memory management (and why you shouldn't be using a tool like this) should watch this video (2 parts) by Mark Russinovich (the guy who wrote the sysinternals tools, including rammap):
    Part 1 Part 2

The book Windows Internals (co-authored by Mark) is also a good reference.

If you don't have time for a long video or an entire chapter out of a pretty technically heavy book, then Mark has also written a pretty good summary of the 'ram optimizer' situation:
    Ram Optimizer Article

Anyway... If you're having problems caused by memory pressure then there's an easy solution. Buy more RAM! It's cheap, and there's no such thing as too much.
