If they actually have a direct market where you can easily trade gold <-> gems then it will be almost identical to the system in Spiral Knights. The system works as long as you have a balance of gem and gold sinks.

The whole F2P concept revolves around the idea that the people that pay to play support the free to play people. If you don't want to pay anything then grind out the gold and buy the gems on the market. If your time is too valuable then buy a bunch of gems and buy the gear you want.

The econ people have something to play with too by manipulating the market and what not. Buying and selling ultra rare items and stuff. Seems logical to me.

Runes of Magic used to allow players to buy the gems for Gold. Basically this allowed for gold sellers to buy a gem, ans sell it for in game gold, then trade the gold to the players in game. Trading diamonds was suspended due to all the gold sellers using it to make money.
