PokemoGoBot did the same for me. So I tried another bot, Necro. Same problem. I got the coords by using Google Earth, which also gave me the feet above sea level - I was looking by the Bellagio fountains in Las Vegas. I first tried 5k distance, then even popped it up to 15k . Still nothing. Now the interesting part here, is that I also verified with Pokemon Map, that there were pokestops nearby.

At first, I thought I might be softbanned. But then I followed your advice, cleared out the coords, and set the coords using some standard ones in California, and it worked perfectly. Can we infer that somehow the servers are detecting the bot? Or is it possible the feet above sea level somehow messed it up? Or something else I am missing?

This has nothing to due with your coords or walking distance. The pogo API was updated. ATM as far as I know no bots are working. My bot that I had set at the santa monica pier is getting the same error and there are hundreds of pokestops there. Wait for the bot to be updated. If you are not convinced that it is due to the API then turn "Use Incense/Use Lucky Eggs" on and wait for the bot to say "Used Lucky Egg/Used Incense: X remaining" and then log into that account on your phone and I guarantee you no lucky egg or incense were used.
