Pokestops only give xp

Why do pokestops only give xp? No items, just xp... Did this happen to anyone else yet?

I'd take just the xp over a bunch of pokeballs and regular potions any day.

Why is it good if you only get 50 xp, and you have zero pokeballs, and can't even catch pokemon anymore?
