Anybody know exactly what this means?
Just another quick update, we have discovered that users utilizing MITM techniques may be getting flagged by Niantic servers. Please note read-only MITM is not affected by this flagging.
We've confirmed this to the best of our joint abilities, if we discover anything else, we'll be sure to update, however, this should be not a cause for panic at this stage.
Does MITM techniques = bots?
What would an example of a read-only MITM technique be?
Not too sure how to word this because I dont quite understand what I am talking about lol, but:
If MITM techniques includes bots, will they still be getting flagged this way after the API is fixed? E.g. did they only get flagged because the bots were not able to deal with unkown6 etc, so that flagged the accounts to Niantic, but after the API fix when bots are updated, they will be able to deal with this and wont get flagged anymore by this?
Sorry if this is stupid or makes no sense at all!

No.
This is where the API is intercepted by a custom proxy, the code is manipulated, then relayed to the device where the app is installed. People were using MITM to make it look like they had legendary pokemon in their index, or an index full on pokemon with 9999 CP, etc.
It was smoke and mirrors as the actual player info on Niantic's server did not have these features.

Thanks for clearing that up. Like I said, I don't know much about these types of things.

My aunt works for google and says they are not focusing much on pokemon go, they are focusing how to limit child porn on the search engine, improving the picture detection. Ingress is first above pokemon go

Awesome! tell your friend to say hi to my grandmother. She is the botexpert at Niantic. She is the one who did the typo which disabled the bots...

I can't help but to get just a little joy from the foreseeable carnage that is about to take place. The masses of people who used bots thinking it was safe or that they had a "human-like config". Their all going to be banned and the tears will flow like a great flood. The forums and discords will blow up with botters throwing blame. When in reality it's their own fault and we all warned them. RIP
