With the gorgeous Cataclysm cinematic already leaked, and Diablo III with a tentative 2011 release, there's a lot of room at this year's Blizzcon (which begins tomorrow) for new announcement about Blizzard's secret MMO project. Some have placed their bets on a next-gen FPS, but I have my doubts. Amid other speculation, the main battle is over whether or not Blizz' is telling the truth about the MMO being a new IP, a series crossover, or a sequel to WoW.
Awhile ago, I cast the die of speculation and said my piece. Blizzard has said before that the new flagship MMO will be a new series entirely, but announcements have been taken back in the past. Blizzard isn't known keeping their promises, after all.
We can sit here and analyze, speculate, and ponder for as long as we want, but we really won't know what Blizz has up their magical sleeve until tomorrow.
With Tenacious D and "Level 85" Elite Tauren Shaman (Metzen's in-house band with the Sons of the Storm) playing musical acts, combined with spirits and snacks, PvP tournaments, and a whole load of other exciting content, one can only hope that this year's 'Con will be as epic as the moment Blizzard released the first information about DIII at the World Wide Invitational (with a fanfare of "Tristram"), or when Cataclysm was introduced to screaming fans in an overcrowded Anaheim Convention Center.
Other WoW news sites around the web are planning all kinds of parties for the momentous occasion, and I'm sure that many of our MMOwned members will be attending as well. At this time, MMOwned has not organized any kind of official "meet up", though I have a feeling that more of our community would show up if Blizzcon was held in the geographical "middle ground" between the EU and US, which is obviously the East Coast.
Domain name registrar investigators have gone to work, searching through domain name reserves and speculating based upon any new purchases by Blizzard or their subsidiaries. This was how Diablo III was originally found out, as Blizzard was forced to purchase the domain name from a fansite. Because of this undermining tactic, I wouldn't be surprised if Blizzard purchases the domain name after the 'Con.
That aside, it should be a very exciting Blizzcon with some very interesting (and equally long-awaited) announcements.
