    Illiard24's Computer Help Thread

Well i work with computers pretty much all day, maintaining, building, upgrading, fixing the works. So i thought i'd make a thread where you can ask me questions about things you want to know. Whether it be a program you have and want to know how to fix it. If you want to build a new computer and need the best list of parts to fit your budget, or anything else computer related. You can post it in this thread or you can pm me.

I hope i can help some people.

My friend has just installed Slackware 12.0, and he forgot to install X so he can
run KDE. How does he install X manually? He doesn't have a package manager.

If you can answer this then i believe you have some skills. If not, too bad.

Ok.. My question about source dedicated server, how do i get my server on web, i can't forward some ports (or what it is called) because my router isn't on portforward.com's list. BTW i got a ZyXEL Prestige 2602R-61. Anything more you need to know?

Well im going to already assume you have the software and know how to set up the server and you just need help in forwarding some ports. Just because your specific router model is not on portforward.com's list doesn't mean it can't be done.

You just have to login to your router and edit some things.

For ZyXEL routers im pretty sure the default ip to access them is 192.168.1.254

Once there you have to login in to access all the settings.

Once in go to the Network Tab -- Then Nat, then there will be a port forwarding tab.

And once in there you just have to forward these ports

    UDP 1200 (Friends Network)
    UDP 27000 to 27015 (Gameport)
    UDP 27020
    TCP 27030 to 27039
    TCP 27015 (SRCDS Rcon port)

Could you explain exactly what RAM dual-channelling is, what it does, and how it works? But, could you like explain it to me in a simple manner? I'm pretty good with computers, but not very good.
Link to my guide: https://www.mmowned.com/forums/wow-g...rd-policy.html | I'm retired, please don't PM me. Thanks.

Well its not really the RAM that is doing the dual channel part, its the motherboard(if it supports it). On your motherboard you might have noticed that the ram slots are color coded, say two are yellow and two are black. To take advantage of the Dual Channel support you would put 1 ram stick in the first yellow slot and the second in the other yellow slot(its prefered that the ram used is the same) And if you using 4 sticks of ram do the same for the black ports.

Basically what is happening is that the motherboard is able to access and use 2 memory modules at a time instead of just one which helps with in reducing latency. One of the RAM modules could be used for reading and writing the incoming data that you requesting from your computer while the other RAM module is is preparing the next process you have requested your computer to do which greatly speeds it up because it doesn't have to reset and restart the process of reading and writing.

So basically it just improves the memory bandwidth and allows two things to be sent and used by the ram simultaneously. Hopefully this helps

Alright... I've windows Vista on my Acer Aspire M5100, and recently I've installed XP Pro, and now I can't seem to find the driver for my chipset. I've searched almost everywhere, but still can't find it. When we bought this comp every driver and everything were already installed. So, could you help me find this, I'll post a pic of the result from SIW.

Please help me... Im tired of Vista.
