[Linux Help] Looking to install Linux

Alright, one of the things I got for christmas was an oldschool laptop. The IBM Thinkpad A21m.

I'm having problems getting the ethernet controller to work, but after searching for solutions to that, it seems that thinkpads (even ones as old as the one I have) are great for Linux.

I've been wanting to try out linux for quite a while, but didn't really want to reformat my main computer.

So now I have a crappy computer I can mess around with as much as I want because I have the win 98 disk/serial with it, so if worse comes to worse, I just reformat.

Anyhow, the main question I'm looking for is what Linux, in your opinion, is the best? I know there are multiple versions of Linux, seeing as its freeware. One that I have heard alot about is Red Hat. Are there any others that are decent?

The laptop is only going to be for messing around with linux and maybe word processing for now. So any help/hints/suggestions would be welcome.

I was going to say Ubuntu but UserDutty beat me to it. It's a great distro if your just starting to use linux. I used it on my mac mini for well over a year and it ran great on that old thing.

Just got Ubuntu downloaded and installed on my laptop. So far I really like it. I was having problems getting the drivers to work on win98...I couldn't connect to the internet, 16bit color is teh suck, and some other things.

With Ubuntu installed it makes it look like a decent computer.

Ubuntu is for noobs. For dedicated servers it's way better to have Debian.
Cause it's more stable and it's not made on top of something else, Ubuntu is
just windows wannabe + wannabe Debian, as it's made on Debian.

Somewhat true, ubuntu isn't for just for "noobs", but I prefer debian if I'm just using it as a server.

Saying that Ubuntu is wannabe Debian because it's made from Debian is the stupidest thing I've ever heard, it's like saying cheese is wannabe milk because it's made from milk. I would rather say that Ubuntu is "userfriendlied" version of Debian.

Ubuntu is way too Windows similar sh*t. If you want windows like systems, install windows.

If you want linux systems, install a real system instead of using something that's so userfriendly you can call it windows.

You are a complete moron. Ubuntu is nothing like windows, and why are you recommending Debian to this person? He clearly has no experience in Linux and does not want to run a server. Do you think it's cool to know the names of other distributions?
