Background:
a lil over 2 years ago i heard this story about 2 guys i knew that had gone behind a movie theater when they were refurbishing it and they took all the old movie seats and sold them on ebay for 85 bucks a piece...they made around 150k...true story as i saw the seats and saw them selling them...they had a falling out and one of them later became my best friend....well neither of us really slept at night so we would always get together and try to find something to do....so we started dumpster diving...driving around and looking in random dumpsters behind stores (never ever ever look in a dumpster of a place that sells any sort of food products, it will be extreamly disgusting)...we checked about every dumpster we came a cross in about a 50 mile radius of where we live....we finally concluded there were 2 places that would never let us down the first being staples and the 2nd being pier 1 imports (this post is about staples although we have found over 7k worth of goodies in the pier 1 dumpster from full bedroom sets (estimated around 1k) to dinning room tables (estimated around 700))....i will be focusing on staples as it has become the most profitable....
The Fraud of Staples:
Staples claims they are green and recycle printer cartridges...this is not entirely true....they want your business so they offer you a $3 coupon when you return a cartridge to there store, but they jack the price up $5...go figure...i will touch more on this shortly...they also claim they destroy goods that are damaged
The Goods:
So far the things i have found in staples dumpsters (staples does not sell food products and rarely will you ever come across any):
Oak office desk with drawers and shelves (value $350)
Offices chairs galore (the current one i use is valued at $200)
Software Software Software (after April 15th they throw away all there turbo tax (*each copy will sell for at least $40 on ebay i have found over 300 copies in a single shot))
USB Key (value 10-40)
Blank Cd's & Dvd's (i find these by the thousands)
Computer Components (value 10-100's
Safes and lock boxes (values vary depending on if there locked and if they have keys)
Cables and other misc stuff (values vary)
Brief Cases (value $75)
and finally the most valuable Ink and Toner Cartridges (ink sells for $.40-$8.00 a cartridge Toner sells for $11-$22)
The Ink Well:
well as many of you know there are sites on the internet that do ink recycling and they pay pretty damn good...if you don't go do a google search for ink recycling...most will even pay shipping...so here is the deal once - twice a month most staples recycle all there returned empty cartridges to there recycling center aka "there dumpster round back" when this happens they throw them in these massive boxes that will contain 500-1000 cartridges....and there is usually around 8-10 boxes there...even if half of the cartridges are only worth 40 cents each thats still a ton of cash for next to no work...just sorting and shipping...the best is boxes of the toner since they are worth so much (the first time i did this i thought the toners wouldn't be worth shit and i left like 5 boxes filled with em still kickin myself in the ass)....im sure by now you get the point
The Dark Side:
staples has a program called "staples rewards" when you spend so much money they send you out a rebate coupon check and when you spend a shit load of money they make you a platnium member...these checks are not ID needed checks...you can use them online or in the stores don't matter...on these checks are the account id's the address and all sorts of other goodies...after obtaining these checks comes the fun part...most people don't set the online portion of the account up...at least 4 out of 5 don't...so the idea here is to do it for them and to change the delivery address of the check...you can even order more cards and all sorts of stuff...i wouldn't recommend sending them to your house but then again you can be like hey i never checked the name and it must of been a typo...or any other story you can think of....i have seen checks upwards of 300-700 bucks....and if the person had never gotten it in the mail i doubt they would of been the wiser...i know for my company i only get 1 once ever like 6 months and they never come on a standard date....
Final Note:
There is so many other things that you can find and sell...this is just a brief introduction of things people wouldn't nessicarly think to look for...i know it was months of going there before i decided to see if ink actually could be recycled and if so for how much...for those that are goign to hit me with your a dirty mother ****er and holler BS...go check it for your self...staples is actually usually very clean and often has tons of goodies...make sure to get your self an led flashlight as it does not cast a light beam go during off hours wear dark clothing, and just be smart about it...most importantly be safe, if theres a ****ing compactor DO NOT attempt to go inside of it or open it you will be sorry or worse...dead...
