This is how you do not scam. He is a local friend of Det. Gomos of a florida police department.. He has been caught, spent a year in jail and got out a few days before his project started.

Which in my opinion is stupid of JAPWORKS to accept get car done first without payment. Theres a whole thread of hate on this guy, just google Joe Dono.

I was going to post this in the guide's section of the board on How not to scam, but a your thread beat me to it.

i agree JAPworks should have pushed the car to the corner of the shop till the kid showed up with more money when he started adding and adding and adding crap. But they are a fresh shop trying to do the best they can and get their work out there. And he took advantage of that. Yeah they brought it on them selfs, but he def was good at talking his way outa giving them more money. regardless, the kid isn't gonna see his mom's car again! unless he goes to the BBQ they are planning.

i'm fine with scamming some gold/items and/or an account or two. But this is just way over the limit. other thing is, he should realize he is obviously HORRIBLE at scamming!

Heh, suprised this made it's way over here considering this is local to me

But, if you read the first few pages of the thread you would see that the original intention of bringing in the car was *just* for the paint job, which Joe Dono put a down payment on. As they had the car, Dono kept bringing in expensive parts and asking to add those to the car. This is when the work started adding up and Dono was feedin' the shop some BS story about his grandfather going to pay for it all.

The shop could have just parked the car to the side, but Dono was already a good scammer so i'm guessing he got them to trust him and they continued to work on the car anyway. They figured Dono was going to pay and since they were a new shop this car would help bring some spotlight to them showing how good thier work is.

$16,000 seems like a lot of money for the car, but most of that wasn't in parts it was the cost of labor done to the car. The car was basically completely stripped down and rebuilt custom and fully repainted from yellow to white (inside engine bay, etc) along with a turbo install, custom subs in the back and interrior redone.

I don't see why someone would go through the trouble of paying $16,000 for a somewhat different looking car, but it's clear he was trying to scam it from the start, no matter how much it was going to cost.
