If I am not wrong, then he sized the render, cut out some parts and smudged them a bit.. but I might be wrong.

Actually, Elimob, you might be able to see how I do them if you watch my video. I usually create a new layer, take my smudge tool, with a scattered brush, and turn on "sample all layers".
