This is what I have gathered, do not take this as accurate information.
- The original author of POEHUD (TehCheat) stopped working on it 1 or 2 leagues ago. Qvin here forked it, renamed it to ExileApi due to extensive changes and continued to update and release it
- However, people continued messaging TehCheat to update PoEHUD to work with latest league and even offered him money to do so, because they weren't informed about new ExileApi version
- TehCheat encouraged by ability to make some easy money on his abandoned project updated memory pointers and started selling updated version to people for 10$ "donation" (it's not a donation if you get something in return for your money BTW, it's a sale)
- To avoid backlash (since PoEHUD has always been free and open source) TehCheat promised that the application will only be paid for first 7 days of the league and will then be released for free to everyone. Think as in paid head start to start using the application earlier than the public. That was 11 or 12 days ago, there is still no free version.
- TehCheat also prevented Qvin from publicly releasing updated ExileApi so that his paid version is the only working version available so that he can sell more copies. Since TehCheat technically owns the code behind ExileApi (it's a fork) it feels like he can do that, but I don't exactly know what the code license says about such practice (if there even is any license). It's a shitty thing to do nonetheless.
- He has now changed his mind apparently and there will be no free PoEHUD version as promised 7 days after league start, instead there will be a limited PoEHUD basic version which is free (and useless) and a paid regular version that we all know. The free version is supposedly to be released on April 30th.
To answer your question:
- The only "official" working PoEHUD version is being sold for 10$ by TehCheat. There will be a free "basic" version released on April 30th.
- ExileApi which IMO is vastly superior has been updated, but has not been released publicly due to conflict described above
- There are some random forks created by the community on GitHub with updated offsets and pointers that may or may not work. You usually have to compile them yourself though.
Like I said, this is what I have gathered from reading various threads here, so take it all with a grain of salt and healthy dose of critical thinking and feel free to correct me if I misunderstood anything.
TehCheat is no longer selling PoeHud anymore so you might want to update that part

you are spectacularly wrong. qvin developed his hud parallel to poehud since ages, he made it public couple of leagues ago. qvin's exileapi was a dirty fork of his private hud. people like stridemann and zaafar did an extensive refactor on it.
tehcheat did extensive community polling before deciding on paid version and duration of it being available only to donators (which tbf he wanted it to be cheaper and available earlier, people told him he deserves donation for all the hard work he did for hud). he didnt do it for the "easy money" as you've said. he did it because people enthusiastically reacted to the possibility of having hud updated asap for a donation fee.
tehcheat didnt prevent qvin from releasing his version, qvin took it down himself, even after being told it's fine to be public.
some folks here think they have the right to demand anything from poehud/exileapi developers. they ain't owe u shit

If you're right then I think it would be extremely helpful for entire community and those who don't closely follow development for Qvin and TehCheat to clearly write both here in their threads and on GitHub (which are first hits on Google) about what the projects are, created by whom, for what purpose, define a code license and clearly state that there are paid private versions, as well as public free ones. This would get rid of a lot of confusion and rumors I think.
I have no problem in paying for someones work, but I don't like the way it's being done now by calling it "donations" when it's clearly sales and everything being done hush hush under the table. There should be a website, big PayPal "BUY NOW" button for noth Qvin and TehCheat versions and without a doubt they would make a lot of money for their effort if it would be reasonably priced.

So, there a little bit of misinformation in the above messages.
PoeHUD wasn't made by TehCheat, but was being maintained by him. It was made by someone I can't remember as it was before I started using HUD. Qvin maintains his own private fork of PoEHUD which he renamed to ExileAPI. It contained a lot of performance enhancements and included some private things. Attempts were being made by me, Stridemann, and Zaafar to improve the not-so-great performance of PoEHUD. TehCheat wanted to step down from updating PoEHUD as he had been doing it for years at this point and was tired of it (generally not worth his time, causing him to be delayed at league start... etc). He talked with Qvin who quickly threw together a public version of his HUD. Last league, Qvin disappeared and basically nobody was updating HUD. I think it took about a week to get a fully working HUD, mostly.
Now, to cut back to this league. TehCheat had no interest in updating offsets this league... but put out some feelers to see if there was enough people willing to donate for him to update offsets ASAP, so we don't have another week long delay before a working HUD. Polls showed that people did want this, so he spent the first couple of days getting HUD fully working and fixing every issue people reported, even offsets people aren't publicly using.
Cut to today, there are many complaints on the forum about the offsets being private. Due to all the complaints, he delayed the public release an extra week and is no longer taking donations for access.
I made my HUD-lite in order to help some of the strain on the devs to get day 1 working HUD, but it is also a lot of effort (about two weeks of off and on effort this league) to get it working. Before this league... I think I got 1 donation for all this effort, so I also went with a small donation drive (only the first weekend before release). Released it publicly late Sunday iirc.

I think TehCheat is just genuinely done. He isn't in this "for the community" anymore, nor does he enjoy doing what he's doing. I think when it boils down to that, he's just disgruntled in general hence why he is so stubborn and has a bad attitude about the whole thing. I feel like he resents the community to a certain degree, because he keeps throwing the label freeloaders around in a derogatory way. The only reason he's back is because there's money to be made, and I genuinely feel that's the only reason.

Thank you for that. I was not really in the mood to read all 10+ pags of trash talk
Just my opinion: @TehCheat doesn't own us nothing. He have been working in this project for years and for free. If he decided to be paid for it, so be it.
However, it would be more ethical to say it was now a paid program and remove from his words the "donation 10$" thing. Cause the donation shit looks like a Lie. And Nobody likes that. Simple like that.
For some reason, he was not being honest with his real feelings: Sell PoEHUD in this forum. It's quite different from working in something and wait for donations. For example, Path of Building creator always had a donate page.
With that being said, imo there is no reason to be mad with TC. Throw the first stone on him who doesn't like money or love to work for free. I can't do it...
I am a lawyer and I have absolutely no idea what "fix offsets" means. Also, I dont want to know about it. I just want to click twice in the loader and play poe with HUD. Simple. So yes, doesn't matter if it is hard or easy, its the job he always did here and atleast for me I need to be grateful for it.
btw sorry for my crap english. I'm Brazilian.
cheers and be safe, may covid19 not be with u

I've already stated that he didn't really have an interest in updating offsets anymore. That was one of the reasons we switched to Qvin's HUD. He also never went away, he just doesn't post here much as we normally chat in discord
It's actually fairly active in there, but sadly had to go private.
Whatever you want to call it, TehCheat offered his services if the community was to make it worth his while. Based on polling, they would, so he did. The end.
TehCheat and a handful of devs have been providing a very time consuming, free service for a long time. Whining when you lose access, especially when you have alternatives available to you is a very childish thing to do.
I've tolerated the whining in this thread for long enough. Please stay on topic. If you wish to discuss this further, open up another thread in the general section. Note that if it becomes unproductive whining again, I will close it and add infractions to all those involved.
EDIT: I've also tried to go through the thread and clean it up. Don't feel attacked if you post got cleaned up. I kept ones that seemed to be semi-productive discussion, but this thread became a mess.

The tool has gone through several generations, and I imagine this will end up being yet another.
Everyone that has contributed throughout the years deserves praise, it's been more hours than most can imagine.
The only constructive response is to help out with new efforts, whining about the state of things will not help anything.
A little history for those curious, to put it all into perspective:
Evozer initially released his original multihack (ExileHUD) back in invasion/ambush, then closed source
Once that was no longer maintained, Coyl reversed engineered it and put forth an updated open source version renamed PoeHUD
Jaerin later took over after Coyl stopped updating, and finally TehCheat stepped up for the big 3.0 updates, further is covered by Sychotix post above.
Besides this numerous others have helped with development and reversing, as well as hefty plugin development.
Given that the tool and plugins around it has grown to support such a vast feature set, the burden of updating offsets for each release has grown quite a bit, and unless people are willing to spend their league start reversing the changes then we'll see the same each league.
I personally don't use HUD, but my private projects has had good success doing what Sychotix has with one of his branches, keeping a smaller feature set for day 1 support to get the essentials up and running. I think this is a good way forward for whatever form the tool takes.

Still might be a public compiled release for Harvest league but don't know too much about that.

He has a private version that he maintains. He had a private version prior to the release of his hud, as well.
