    1) It's made (as is everything) for profit. The company buys a big server, and divides it in parts. For each of those parts, they ask money. A VPS is intended for small organisations or companies that have no need for heavy guns (yet).
    2) Please cite your sources? It's more likely that they use botnets (collections of infected home computers all over the world). If they'd ever use a VPS, it'd be because they're cheapskates .
    3) No? A VPS is a virtual private server, think of it as a dedicated server split in virtual pieces. Those pieces get sold individually.
    4) You'll find VPSLAND.com to be used often by smaller private servers: as it's one of the cheapest and safes there is. Alternatively, cheap Linux plans can be found at intovps.com

    A) Virtual private servers are like its stated virtual. It emulates multiple computers which are then sold/rented to people. They can then be loaded with the OS of your choice and you share a real server with multiple people but everybody on it can work with their vps like its a stand alone server.
    B) For multiple reasons. If you have an OS with raw socket support you can with some skill abuse that to spoof your IP. Combine that with a lot of virtual servers doing that but actually its only 1 high grade server divided to small servers that have just enough specs to do the attack they are meant to do. In effect splitting the high grade server into an attack cluster of adequate enough attackers.
    C) You can't increase the speed of an attack past the maximum of the hardware/connection. What you can do is making the attack more effective by using multiple virtualized servers with random/spoofed IP addresses.
    D) Google for a dedicated server with root access, a reseller account with root access or just a server where you can do the install themselves. All must allow virtualization. But the drawback is you have to get a subscription which you will have to put on a fake name so you don't get caught
