Linux Users Banned from Diablo III Servers

    Update: Official Blizzard Response

Blizzard has banned all Linux users who are playing Diablo III on Linux using Wine. A number of Linux users suddenly got a message from Blizzard that they can no longer use their account to play Diablo III any more.

Diablo III's cheat detection system is detecting Wine as a way to cheat. Blizzard is refusing to refund the money or unban the accounts which are banned.

Blizzard's reply to one of the complaints:

A third party program is any file or program that is used in addition to the game to gain an unfair advantage. These programs may increase movement speed or teleport heroes from one place to another beyond what is allowed by game design. It also includes any programs that obtain information from the game that is not normally available to the regular player or that transmit or modify any of the game files.

    Another explaination:

Thank you for contacting us. An additional review of the action taken against the Diablo III account on [email protected] has been completed. We have confirmed our initial findings, and the account action will not be reversed or changed.

Actions are based on the violation's severity and take previous violations into consideration. This action was taken in accordance with the Terms of Use (us.blizzard.com/en-us/company/legal/) and our Diablo III Policies (us.battle.net/support/en/article/diablo-iii-policies), which all players acknowledge and agree to before logging into the game.

We understand that these policies may seem harsh, but they are in place to ensure that every player is able to enjoy their time in Diablo III. Thank you for respecting our position.

There is a thread on this on Wine forums and Linux users are not really happy. Wine is clearly not responsible for this and it does not give any gaming advantages to users who are using Linux.

Playing the game on Linux, although not officially supported, will not get you banned – cheating will.

this isnt an official response to the linux/wine issue. its some customer support that was unlucky enough to come across the ticket and copy/pasted the generic response. an official response would at least have the word "linux" or "wine" in it. Nor do we know that all those linux players werent exploiting/botting.

this whole thread needs more substance for me to believe it.

edit// thanks for beating me to the real blizzard response maisteri.

"Playing the game on Linux, although not officially supported, will not get you banned – cheating will." This is what im referring to. We dont know their detection methods, nor will we ever. We also wont know if every one of these banned accounts were truly clean (we all know the innocence game).

Either way, guess they figured out not to use linux for D3 anymore.

Do you really think Blizzard will admit making an "Oops"?

@Maisteri If you're refferring to situation back in 2006 then yes, but back then they also stated "everything's fine" at first, to admit mistake and unban accounts later.
