An interesting video popped up about two weeks ago on Vimeo entitled 'Avatar Days'. Below is a snippit taken from the vimeo page that can be found here.
This is short film directed by Gavin Kelly ( piranhabar.ie ) I worked on a while ago called "Avatar Days". What makes this one special is the fact that it was filmed, vfx'ed and comped all in just 4 days. It was made as part of the "4 day Film" catagory in the Darklight Film Festival.
It follows 4 MMORPG players taking about their online persona's. As they tell their stories we see them go about their everyday lives against the mundane backdrop of city life...but as their Avatars.
There was a team of people on this with director Gavin Kelly leading the troupe. I worked on the 3d characters along with John O' Connell and Will Sharkey.
Not only was the video artfully done, with animations built specifically for it but the message the video brings forth is also intriguing. The main idea I took from Avatar Days was on ideas of escapism, and how it can affect people's day-to-day lives. Really touching on why we play videos games so intensely sometimes. What drives us to game. (Woah, English thesis right there).
Anyways, hit the jump for the worthwhile (yet slightly depressing because of the music) video.
Thanks for reading, and I hope to be bringing more stuff like this now that I have some actual free time again.
Bravo to Piranha. Really does capture the essence of addiction, liked the animation work for the avatars.
Reminds me of those days when iw as a little kid and i looked around and wondered "what IF hundreds of skeletons and 4 foot long fire ants pop out of the ground at my school.."
I Love this docco it is such a refreshing look at what a real wow addict is, none of this devoted basement dweller crap..
on another note it's a pity how far behind this site is getting in the news =/ we were the first to get cata leaks at one point.... atleast of the 3 larger news sites
