With the news of EA buying the rights to Star Wars games, and signing BioWare, Dice and Visceral to develop three separate titles in the Star Wars franchise, which they are already in the process of developing, there are many exciting possibilities ahead. While the three new games in development may borrow from the Star Wars movies, they will consist of brand new content including new stories, planets, worlds, characters, and of course, epic battles.
According to EA President, Frank Gibeau, the three Star Wars games will cover many platforms, including the PC, tablets, and mobile devices. With mention of standard consoles, which may including the Nintendo, Xbox, and Playstation, as well as portable devices, EA may profit by making a move aimed at children, or, more hopefully, by strengthening the growing experience of portable games on Android tablets, iPads and other mobile devices such as Android smart phones and the growing series of iPhones on the market.
With ground breaking games such as Bastion, the Walking Dead, and many others entering the tablet market after transitioning from PC/Console counterparts, with an experience that feels quite similar to full-on console games, there is a very good opportunity for these developers to create some truly captivating gaming experiences that could very well shape the future direction that tablet gaming takes, and one can only hope for a cross-platform experience with a game that is available not only on the Playstation, but also with a similar experience translated to the iPad or Android tablets and PC systems. After the release of Star Wars: The Old Republic, perhaps plans may be in place to attempt to draw Star Wars fans from around the globe into another RPG game, which could be a great direction to move towards if EA attempted to create the first truly revolutionary MMORPG to hit the smartphone and tablet market, but only time will tell; for now, all that is known is that there are many exciting new productions to expect from the beloved Star Wars series.
