[Question]General question about editing

I never actually had a question before as all the stickies seem to cover all the things needed to know about model editing. But sitting here working on edits while servers are down for maintainence, I thought of something. Instead of downloading the fix every patch(like todays patch), is it possible to extract the entire common.mpq file, replace the normal files in there with my edited ones and have it work without needing a fix? I'm sure it would need to be done every patch, but wouldn't be so bad after the first since I'd know the exact spot for every edit. Plus blizzard gives that nice 8 hour downtime period to do this instead of waiting a couple days for the fix.

Figured asking before trying could save me a few hours of trouble.
