[Question] Model editing

Ok, I have always been a fan of model editing, and I decided i wanted to accualy get into it. But I've never done a model edit in my life (Lawl?) Well, the reason i made this topic is if maybe someone could help me with my first one, what programs i should DL and use, and how to go about doing it. Cause I am clueless! Please, it would mean so much to me.
