looking for help on what tools I need (4.0.6)

I want to do some personal model edits, I am having a little trouble. frankly in reality my brain is fried, too much info, not enough links work and too much data is too old and, in my case, too new. I am playing on a private server, running 4.0.6. what tools and what versions do I need for exporting, importing models and textures. your assitance appreciated.
