Actually Blizz is getting better at stopping model editing. What probably happened was when you stepped a foot outside the gates before the BG started, the server detected that you were not supposed to be there for another X amount of time. Thus flagging you for a GM. Or, you could have been REALLY unlucky and since you were on the PTR might have popped into a BG that a GM was watching anyway.
