Try using an overlay or color burn/dodge layer for the tattoo, rather than painting it straight on in black.

try something like cryptic glyphs and markings, a good way to look up a few good ideas would be drow glyphs where blizzard got the idea for gul dan's glyphs in wc3 TFT
