Both description of Ballista are wrong. well.. some of it at least:

Ballista- Siege weapon that resembels crossbows in much bigger scale. usually Ballistas has wheels so that they may be more mobile. Ballista has many uses for an instance: simply destruction tool or it can also be used to fire a rope that is attached to the gigantic arrow, that is used usually to be able to climb from place to place. But I guess you got the idea before. ah well

and for the sake of you knowing mid-age siege weaponary better:

Catapult: Siege weapon that resembels huge spoon just in huge scales. Like the Ballista it usually carried on wheels for mobility. These war machines are made of wood and meant to be stretched downward so that when on releases the "spoon" it fires different items. Usually Catapults are used mainly for destructive force while sieging a town or a city by putting on the "spoon" heavy rocks. Sometimes for extra destructive force, the rocks may be covered with oil and be lighted.

there are few more siege weapons but you can figure'em out allready by the name:

Siege Ledder: Used to climb on walls.

Siege Tower: Used to carry heavy number of troops to the front lines of a battle. Usually, that'll be the walls.
