Things You'll Need
* A prot-specced Warrior or Paladin of level 70
* Tanking gear
Steps
1
Step One
Hit level 70. Tanks cannot be made uncrushable below level 70.
2
Step Two
Stack Defense up to 490. This is very basic, and should be the first thing any level 70 tank does. Try to find items that have Defense naturally; don’t bother with Defense enchants or armor kits just yet. You may need some later, but ignore them for now. Once you hit 490, keep any remaining Defense gear you might have.
3
Step Three
Start stacking Avoidance once you hit 490 Defense. “Avoidance” is the combined total of your Dodge, Block and Parry percents, along with a flat 10% chance for a mob to Miss. In order to become uncrushable against raid bosses, your combined Avoidance must equal 104.5% or better.
4
Step Four
Factor in your skill-based defenses. While Warriors may seem like they can become uncrushable very easily (Shield Block raises your Block chance to 75%, leaving 29.5% Avoidance to be made up) remember that Shield Block has only a single charge, or two if you spent a talent point on it. Paladins have an easier time with Holy Shield and the Libram of Repentance, which combine to give a total of 35.4% Block chance, but lasts for 4 or 8 charges. This means that to start, Warriors only need to stack 29.5% Avoidance, but will eventually want to stack the entire 104.5% while Paladins need only stack 69.1% Avoidance, provided they keep Holy Shield up (which any smart tankadin will do.)
5
Step Five
Stack Block, Dodge and Parry ratings to boost your Avoidance. While the basic Defense stat does increase your chances to Dodge, Block and Parry, having the ratings on their own is much more efficient and will get you farther, faster.
6
Step Six
Invest in the new items available for Badges of Justice. As of patch 2.3, many new tanking items have become available for purchase with Badges of Justice that have tons of Block, Dodge and Parry rating. They typically cost 60 or 75 Badges of Justice each, but the introduction of a daily Heroic Instance quest and Badge of Justice drops from Karazhan bosses have made this easier. These items are of a level between Mount Hyjal and Black Temple, and so are far superior to just about anything else the average player has access to. Be aware that some of these items lack Defense, so you’ll need to make this up through gems, enchants and armor kits.
7
Step Seven
Know the limitations. Even if your Avoidance adds up to 104.5%, there are still ways you can receive a Crushing Blow. Always keep your front to the enemy, cast as little as possible (when you cast, you are vulnerable) and try not to let any enemies get behind you. Most importantly, always keep Shield Block or Holy Shield active! If it’s cooled down, hit it.
