Hey guys! I just recently started a mage and I’m getting all caught up in level 70 already when I’m only 42! But anyway, I’ve been rummaging through all the mage forums, the Warcraft videos, as well as these forums and I decided to compile little guide for the people that are possibly looking for help with the mage class!
Note: This is mostly PvP ideas I’m not a PvE Guy! Sorry PvE’ers.
Macros
As far as macros go, on the mage forums there is a full list of them.
Link - WoW Forums -> Mage Macro Guide for 2.X
Here are my favorites! Note: I copied these of the forums, my opinions are the “*”
-Modifier Pyroblast
For those with 8/8 Netherwind or similar proc PoM effects, this will ordinarily cast Fireball, but will use Pyroblast instead if you hold Alt. Because of latency, you won’t be able to cast as fast as possible and make use of this. The same was true of old automatic NW macros anyway.
/cast [modifier:alt] Pyroblast; Fireball
*Now, since I just respected frost I modified it which you could do with any spell.
/cast [modifier:alt] Frostbolt (rank 1); Frostbolt
*This has the same effect only with Frostbolt (rank 1) on the alt key.
-Decurse
A reasonable replacement for the defunct decursive addon, hitting this button will remove a curse from whoever’s unit frame or 3D figure your cursor is hovering over. If your mouse is over a hostile or no target, you’ll decurse yourself.
/cast [target=mouseover, help] [target=player] Remove Lesser Curse
*The explanation explains it all. Very useful for PvP so you can stick on one target while decursing others.
-One-Button Portal
Useful for those below level 65 to get around and help their friends get around. Click to portal to Ironforge (Orgrimmar), alt for Stormwind (Undercity), control for Darnassus (Thunder Bluff), and shift for Exodar (Silvermoon).
/cast [modifier:shift] Portal: Exodar; [modifier:alt] Portal: Stormwind; [modifier:ctrl] Portal: Darnassus; Portal: Ironforge
/cast [modifier:shift] Portal: Silvermoon; [modifier:alt] Portal: Undercity; [modifier:ctrl] Portal: Thunder Bluff; Portal: Orgrimmar
*Now, this is rather a “clutter freak” Macro, once again the explanation explains it. I’m a super clutter freak; I hate big bulky UI’s and strive for simplicity.
-One-Button Teleport
Here’s the same thing as the Portal macro, but just for you. It’s not useful past level 59.
/cast [modifier:shift] Teleport: Exodar; [modifier:alt] Teleport: Stormwind; [modifier:ctrl] Teleport: Darnassus; Teleport: Ironforge
/cast [modifier:shift] Teleport: Silvermoon; [modifier:alt] Teleport: Undercity; [modifier:ctrl] Teleport: Thunder Bluff; Teleport: Orgrimmar
*Same thing only for yourself.
-High Level Portal & Teleport
Once you’re level 65, this will get you anywhere. Click for portal, right click for teleport. This one’s even the same for Horde and Alliance.
/cast [button:2] Teleport: Shattrath; Portal: Shattrath
*For those that are a higher level then I!
-There are PLENTY more on the forums these are just a few, I highly recommend reading through the macros as well as the Mage Faq!(WoW Forums -> New Mage FAQ 10/08/07) (I also understand the macros are self explanatory this is only meant to show where to get them!)
Warcraft Videos
I’m not sure how many of you have lingered onto this site, but I found it very helpful as well as entertaining when bored!

I Suck At PvP
Video - I Suck At PvP
He breaks down fights in this video, as well as points out his own mistakes; also he adds comedy to it.
Evertras also has his own site in which he goes more in depth about the mage. As well as in depth about other classes and Do’s and Do not’s.
-Site - ma.sword - Evertras' PvP Mage PageÂ*
Shivan
Shivan has a couple of videos two in which I watched.
Video #1 - Shivan - Frostmage PvP 5
He takes on many people at a time 3-4. This was just an overall great movie to learn from.
Video#2 - Shivan - Frostmage PvP 6
Once again he takes on many people as well as arenas. I found both of these movies interesting. One, they showed that mages are extremely powerful. Two it requires Practice and mental errors by your foes. There are many things and I’m sure many times that it has gone wrong on him.
Now, there are plenty more videos that are on that site that anyone can learn from. This was just meant to show a few good ones and hopefully lead you to more help!
Conclusion
This is my first major post so I’m sorry for the poor setup. Also I was thinking I could get around to every class with this depending on popularity. But I hope this has helped the new comers to WoW as well as some of the veterans.
Note: I understand some of this is commonsense. I DO NOT take credit for any of the macros or movies or any of the links for this matter. I simple found them and expressed my opinion on them.
