Alright, I’ve roleplayed in WoW for a long long time and seen many different and good ways to roleplay. RP battles, too, of course. Now, this is how I roleplay battles.
The game mechanics force us to improvise so never fundamentally follow any guides… Keep your imagination with you instead! In this guide I try to solve as many RP fight types as I can but I can’t promise that I could give you all answers. This guide probably will be updated many times.

“I’m higher level than you are!”
Bored of arguing over the level issue… Levels mean nothing to me when it comes to RP battle! Your character’s strengths and weaknesses and background are what matters. If you use flagRSP, MyRoleplay or ImmersionRP or any other addon that lets you add additional information about your character you should write the info that makes a matter in battle for others to read. Level doesn’t say much about your IC character. A level 70 warrior can be weak and scared IC as a level 7 warrior can make a fine guard!

“LOL, just a shirt! You take hit!”
Instead of only inspecting players also look how they look like… If a description or appearance tells you that this is a Paladin who carries a huge mace in his hand and he looks imba cool he or she is most probably wearing heavy plate armour. Well, if the Paladin says otherwise…

“X /rolls 100. You die”
“X charges at Y, swinging his sword and opening Y’s stomach – then burns Y’s remains.”
“X /rolls… 89 – Y /rolls… 85.”
“Y dies.”
Topic tells you a lot… Personally I hate /roll RP fights. Basically there is nothing wrong with /roll command (it randomises a number between 1 and 100 by default) but sometimes it can be used to make things too simple. 99% of my /roll fights have been very, very bad experience.
The rolling system can and sometimes should be used to solve problems for example when an inanimate object is being used, such as handcuffs and doors.
“X attempts to get out of the handcuffs.”
X /roll below 50
“X fails to remove the cuffs.”
X /roll over 50
“X successfully breaks free of the cuffs.”
A good rule for rolling: rolling should only consist of three results: below 50 failed, over 50 success and 50 means roll again.

… Instead…
Improvise!
The more accurate the RP is the more fun it is. This means that you can not simply “X throws daggers at Y and kills him” but to describe what you do. This may take many “turns” and require many emotes but it also gives your opposite the chance to disturb and maybe even stop you. It makes the fight fair for both sides. Describing things slowly but well also gives space for drama.
“X pulls out his sword and points it at Y.”
“Y is surprised by X’s actions and takes a battle stance, and prepares to draw his dagger.”
“X notices what Y is up to and begins to charge at him.”
“Y attempts to move away from X’s way, reaching for his dagger.”
This is where X would maybe decide if he can hit Y with his charge or maybe runs past him. Or maybe he stops – or does something else! Chances here are limitless. X and Y can also /roll on if X’s charge would be successful.
A good rule is that the longer the action is, the more time it takes to complete. A few examples:
- A rogue attaches poisons to his/her weapons
“Rogue X draws his daggers.”
“Rogue X reaches for a vial of poison in his pocket.”
“Rogue X opens the bottle and drops a few drops from it on his dagger.”
“Rogue X closes the vial and puts it back in his pocket.”
- A paladin “enchants” his/her weapon (for example uses a seal)
“Paladin X draws his sword from his back.”
“X concentrates and prays to the Light to bless his weapon.”
“X points his sword at his enemies, the blade now glowing brightly. X is a bit tired after casting the spell on the sword.”
“X prepares to charge.”
- A mage prepares to cast a spell
“Mage X concentrates, moving her fingers to channel Arcane.”
“X pulls her hands in fists and her hands begin to glow white.”
“X concentrates and a bolt of Arcane takes form in her hand.”
“X attempts to cast the bolt at Y.”
Keep in mind that you should wait a moment after every emote to give people time to react. It is fair to give people a chance to interrupt or stop you between any emote. All actions that are started can be stopped – whether it is healing, swinging a sword or channelling a spell.
For instance, people might and will get angry if they saw something like this…
“Mage X blasts Y with a firebolt.”
“Y does something and doesn’t take hit.”
“X blasts Y with a firebolt again.”
