World PvP - Stalking/Ganking for Dummies and Lowbies
How to gank out in the open, at any level.
I. Getting your character ready
Before you start, you're going to want to pick the character you'll be ganking with. Make sure you're on a PvP server. First off, it's much easier to do this with characters below level 60. Once characters get flying mounts, it's much easier for them to get away after they realize they're being stalked. It is of course possible, but not recommended.
- Make sure your character has whatever movement enhancements possible; Mithril Spurs, Mount Speed Gloves, Riding Crop, 100% Mount, Move Speed boots, etc.
- This works best with a well-geared character that is ready to gank characters five to ten levels above them.
II. Finding your victims
Once you've chosen your character, get a second account with a character ready on the opposite faction. You can use a trial account attached to yours or a new battle.net account for this.
- Decide what level characters you're going to gank and stalk.
- Get a macro bound with the command "/who ab-yz", replacing ab and yz with the low and top end of the characters you'll be ganking.
Once the macro is ready, start pressing it and sort by zone. Take a look at what zones people are in. Decide which zone you're headed to; Try to choose the one with the most people in it. When you've chosen your target zone or specific victim, proceed.
III. Gather your resources
Your targets are always moving. The first thing you want is to figure out what they're doing. If they're in too low level of a zone for their quests, they might be just passing through and not worth your time. If you're aiming for a target zone, this shouldn't really matter.
- Once you know where you're headed, open up this (Graveyards) and this (Flight Masters).
- Create a macro with "/tar x" on the ganking character; replacing x with the player's names, copying and pasting "/tar x" on a new line for each player.
- Keep the second WoW client open, you're going to continue spamming your macro every minute until you actually reach your target or zone to check if the victim(s) has/have dispersed. If the zone loses too many potential ganks, move to a new target or zone.
Proceed below when you're in the zone with your confirmed targets.
IV. Stalking your victims
The fun begins. Once you've arrived, run around the zone spamming your "/tar x" macro.
- Players like to stay near the flight path and quest hub as much as possible. Run around the opposite faction's flight paths first (use the Flight Masters link to figure out where it is in the zone). Move outwards in a circle from there.
Once your target is locked on, engage! It's helpful to have "Target" tracking enabled so you can see where they are on the minimap. Camp them once they're dead
- If your target tries to run, get ready to chase them. If they resurrect at the graveyard, use the Graveyards link you have open to find out the closest GY and pursue.
- Once you manage to kill them at the graveyard itself you can spawn camp at will until they call their buddies or log (remember to use your "/who" macro to check if they logged off).
- Remember to use your /who macro in the other client if you lose sight of your target for too long. They might be flying away and you'll want to know as soon as possible so you can chase them if they're a fun kill, or move on.
- Be prepared to travel a lot to chase specific targets.
V. Epilogue
Ganking with twinks out in the world can be a fun and rewarding experience. Just be ready to spend time stalking that one kill. This guide isn't for everybody, but when I'm sick of doing everything else it's nice to get out there and wreck some randoms; especially as a twink that can take on much higher level characters.
