A Rogue's Guide To PvP (WIP)

Hello everyone, Alynatrill here and this is a guide to rogue PvP. I will be covering tips, tricks, and gear to help you become a better rogue. Some of this guide may be common sense to some people, but I am trying to help everyone, including people that are new to the class.

    1. Talents
    2. Glyphs
    3. Gemming
    4. Macros
    5. Tips + Tricks
    6. Rogue vs Class Tips(In Progress)

    1. Talents
Most rogues will use common subtlety builds, but assassination can also be a viable PvP spec if you have someone slowing your opponent. Assassination has very low mobility leading to them being extremely easy to kite. I will post the most common build for each talent tree, you can play with both and decide what fits your play style better.

    Subtlety
    1 -
http://us.battle.net/wow/en/tool/talent-calculator#cc02!bjS!!YkYYTQYejd!bfThkmNoI - Higher Backstab Crit Chance
2 - Talent Calculator - Game - World of Warcraft
    - Improved Recuperate

    Assassination
    1 -
    http://us.battle.net/wow/en/tool/talent-calculator#cc00!YPSeVkZdbd!g!gjY

    2. Glyphs
Here are the glyphs I would recommend using for both talent trees. These can be changed but I highly
    recommendusing these ones.

    Subtlety
    Prime
    1. Hemorrhage
    2. Shadow Dance
    3. Backstab

    Major
    1. Garrote
    2. Blind
    3. Preparation

    Minor
    1. Distract
    2. Your Choice
    3. Your Choice

    Assassination
    Prime
    1. Mutilate
    2. Vendetta
    3. Slice and Dice

    Major
    1. Blind
    2. Garrote
    3. Sprint (Mobility) | Cloak of Shadows (Survival) | Tricks of the Trade (Offensive)

    Minor
    1. Distract
    2. Your Choice
    3. Your Choice

    3. Gemming
Gemming in Cataclysm is very simple. There isn't much to it, but you have a choice of gemming for socket bonuses or not.

What I recommend is gemming all agility unless you have a piece with a 20 resilience bonus with 2 sockets, red + yellow. Then gem +40 agility and +20 agility +20 resilience. An example is the arena chest piece. Some rogues will gem for all socket bonunses using +40 agility, +20 agility + 20 resilience, and +20 agility +20 hit. I wouldn't recommend this.

    4. Macros
Here I'll show you some common rogue macros that many use. These can greatly improve your performance in both arenas and battlegrounds.

Sap Macro - Useful against stealthed enemies.
    #showtooltip
    /cleartarget
    /targetenemy
    /cast Sap

Hemorrhage Attack - Start attack with hemorrhage if out of energy.
    #showtooltip
    /startattack
    /cast Hemorrhage

    Focus Macros
Focus macros are extremely helpful in arena. These will allow you to kick 1 target while you are killing another. Some skills you will want to have focus macros for are: Blind, Kick, and Sap (Shadow Dance).

To make a focus macro is easy, here is an example and you can just change the skill for your other macros.
    #showtooltip
    /cast [@focus] Kick

    @Enemy Macros
These macros are useless in 2s, but can be very helpful in 3s/5s. These will use a skill on an enemy arena player that you aren't targeting. I will list an example, and like the focus macro, you can change the skill to what you want. I recommend making one for Blind, Kick, Sap (Shadow Dance), Dismantle, and Gouge (optional).

    #showtooltip
    /cast [@arena1] Blind

This macro will cast Blind on the first enemy listed on the standard arena frames on the right side of your screen.

    5. Tips and Tricks
    Killing Frost Mages
As subtlety the best way to kill a mage is to open with garrote and immediately kidney shot. They will be silenced, unable to blink your kidney while you annihilate them.
As assassination your best bet is to run away

Use that smoke bomb!!God (aka Blizzard) gave you smoke bomb for a reason. I see so many rogues misusing or wasting their smoke bomb. Smoke bomb is the reason people bring rogues to arenas. Smoke bomb has so many uses, it will be hard to list them and I will probably forget a couple. Here are the ones I can remember.

Setting up a kill. The player inside cannot be healed unless the enemy healer runs inside. Time it wisely.

Undispellable. If you are running RMP, you can throw a smoke bomb on the enemy that is deep frozen so they cannot be dispelled. This usually results in a match win if you time it correctly.

Restealth. If you are against an enemy comp with melee, you can gouge, sprint, smoke bomb for a restealth. This sounds complicated, but you can see what I mean in a video I will link at the end. Watching these videos will also help you improve on your skills.

Defensive. Throw a smoke bomb on your healer if he is about to die. It will save his life, especially if you disarm/blind the melee.

Taking a rogue out of stealth. Smoke bombs take other rogues/stealthed enemies out of stealth.

The last tip is locking down a healer. (Subtlety)
Locking down a healer is very easy and is something you must do in arena. This will tell you how to do it.

When the match begins, you should start with a sap and start attacking the enemy DPS. Right when the sap ends you need to focus blind the healer again. Before the blind ends you need to either A-Shadow Dance Sap, or B-Vanish Sap the healer. If at any point the healer trinkets, which they should if they are smart, you should reopen with a garrote on the healer.

Thanks for reading guys, that's all for right now. Leave anything I missed/should add in the comments and I will get to it. I hope too keep this updated every patch for changes.

Okay this guide is way to weird man.

    1. Why would you use a random blind macro, with random i mean it just targets the first enemy portrait but maybe that isn't the target you want. Just use a simple focus blind macro
    2. How are you supposed to open with GOUGE on a mage and then kidney and he will be SILENCED from what? <-- You probably meant Garrote.
    3. You forget 1 very important thing that you can do with Smoke Bomb, which probably 99% of the rogues dont know. !Smoke Bomb puts Rogues out of stealth! <-- for example you face priest/rogue you open pri and pop smoke bomb and the rogue will probably get out stealth.

    You make one for @arena1, @arena2, @arena3, etc... I have 3 because I don't run 5s.

    2. How are you supposed to open with GOUGE on a mage and then kidney and he will be SILENCED from what? <-- You probably meant Garrote.
    Thanks fixed :O

Added, sorry I haven't played my rogue in a while, my account is frozen and I'm leveling a new one, I made all this up off the top of my head and it was pretty quick xD

    Thanks for the help.
