For over a year now I have tried to streamline the process of earning the most amount of gold in the smallest amount of time. Since achievements came out, I have maintained over 3300 gold acquired per day. I have tried selling anything and everything -- today I sell epic gems almost exclusively. I usually only list auctions on Tuesdays and sometimes Wednesdays so that I don't run into gem supply issues, and because most people who need gems, need them on those two days primarily. I make as much as I do because I have a lot of cuts that few others have, I know what people desperately needing gems will pay, and I undercut my competition at key points.
I use the following addons to help me speed up what I want to do:
Mailget :
MailGet - Addons - Curse
OneClickBuyout :
OneClickBuyOut - Addons - Curse
Auctionator :
Auctionator - Addons - Curse
There are many addons that do similar things, while most of them are also suitable, I prefer to use these. Mailget allows you to clean out your mailbox in 1 click, faster than you would personally be able to take the items out individually. OneClickBuyout eliminates confirmation "ok" screens and automatically buys an auction by right clicking while holding shift. Auctionator is similar to other general auction house mods, but its best feature is that you are able to scan all your auctions to see if they have been undercut, and you can easily go back and cancel those auctions.
On a day that I have decided to post auctions, I first clean out my mailbox of previous items that have not sold, quickly list them by right click + alt (Auctionator feature), then proceed to check the auction house for gems that I have sold the previous session and no longer have. Some gems I wont try to cut and sell again because their price is too low, and if its too too low I just buy the item out to keep prices high. I also purchase raw gems while I do this check, mostly by bidding on auctions that have a low bid with a high buyout. Once I have checked all the gems, I list the newly cut ones and then take a break for a few minutes. Usually the entire process to this point has taken around 15 minutes for around 200 auctions.
I return after a few minutes and scan my auctions for undercuts using the Auctionator tool. Once it finishes I cancel those auctions which have been undercut by competitors and re-list them. I only list auctions for 12 hours duration because gem deposit is quite high and I expect to do this canceling process for many gems. On Tuesdays, I always do a second scan for undercuts right before I have to head out to raid. When I finish my raid late at night, I just collect tens of thousands of gold from my mailbox. That's really all there is to it.
A long time ago when I was really motivated to make as much gold as possible, I would scan for undercuts whenever I had the chance. The more I did that, the more gold I would make, because I would create a monopoly where people will have to buy my item, because its always the cheapest. Your competition only determines the price of the item, and because I have diversified in many different items (or gems I suppose), I can just choose not to sell a particular that doesn't have a high enough price.
On an average Tuesday I make anywhere between 12,000 and 30,000 gold, with a time investment of 20-30 minutes. I could be making more gold by doing this on other days as well, but the gold per hour would be lower, and I really have nothing to do with the money -- I usually give a lot of it away.
To get to the point where I am, you would need the majority of the gem cuts currently available. If you want to begin to profit off of your recently leveled Jewelcrafting profession, you can. You can make more than 3k/day with almost no patterns at all. The main drawback is that the time investment is high for starters.
Starting out, you should try to obtain many or all of the following non-token recipes:
Balanced Twilight Opal
Defender's Twilight Opal
Glowing Twilight Opal
Guardian's Twilight Opal
Jagged Forest Emerald
Radiant Forest Emerald
Steady Forest Emerald
Timeless Forest Emerald
Accurate Monarch Topaz
Deadly Monarch Topaz
Durable Monarch Topaz
Empowered Monarch Topaz
Glimmering Monarch Topaz
Lucent Monarch Topaz
Pristine Monarch Topaz
Resplendent Monarch Topaz
Wicked Monarch Topaz
Sparkling Sky Sapphire
Stormy Sky Sapphire
Mystic Autumn's Glow
Brilliant Autumn's Glow
Smooth Autumn's Glow
Thick Autumn's Glow
Fractured Scarlet Ruby
Runed Scarlet Ruby
Precise Scarlet Ruby
Bright Scarlet Ruby
These are obtained through: trainer, specific mob drop, reputation, and stone keeper shards (wintergrasp)
You're then going to want to get in contact with someone that is actively farming saronite ore and putting it on the auction house. You will want to setup a system in which they CoD the saronite along with some eternal earth and mabe titanium, for a price that is 10%+ less than the current AH price. Most ore farmers will take you up on this offer because the deposit on saronite is very high, and the chance that it would sell is usually in the 50% range.
Prospect the saronite. The rare quality gems that you receive should be cut and sold on the AH. Try to overprice as much as possible, and be extremely aggressive with undercutting. As for the common (green) quality gems:
Bloodstone : +eternal earth make Bloodstone Band , save for crafting meta gems
Chalcedony : +eternal earth make Crystal Chalcedony Amulet , save for crafting meta gems , save for icy prisms
Huge Citrine : +eternal earth make Crystal Citrine Necklace , save for crafting meta gems
Sun Crystal : +eternal earth make Sun Rock Ring
Dark Jade : save for crafting meta gems , save for icy prisms , AH extras
Shadow Crystal : save for icy prisms , AH a lot of extras
Bloodstone Band, Crystal Chalcedony Amulet, Crystal Citrine Necklace, and Sun Rock Ring are recipes that require 1 gem and 2 crystallized earth to create 1 level 70 WotLK green jewelry item. You will end up making thousands of these, and you should either have access to an enchanter, or have one regularly disenchant these for you. Many in the past have done this by making Shadowmight Rings and Stoneguard Band, but making level 70 greens will generate much more profit. Doing this will result in tons and tons of enchanting mats, primarily infinite dust. The best way to sell this item is to sell it in stacks of 1s. If you have a lot of dust, and the price per dust is high for singles, you should post many stacks of 20s for the same price of your singles to make buyers believe that the current value is what you are trying to sell it at.
With the gold you make from your rare cuts and enchanting mats, you should be investing into three things. First, BID on epic gems that you find on the AH which have high buyouts and thus are unlikely to sell. Secondly, also in attempt to acquire cheap epic gems, obtain gems through trade chat or friends that are very cheap, and talk to the sellers into sending you more gems in the future at that same low price. Lastly, you can invest in damaged necklaces and titanium/titanium powder. The goal, in the end, is to acquire enough Dalaran Jewelcrafting Tokens to enter the epic gem market. This will take many weeks of dailies if you do not speed it up.
With the first few Dalaran Jewelcrafting Tokens that you obtain, you will want to get at least 1 recipe of each epic gem color. When choosing particular recipes, you should always consider what cuts are in least supply on your server. For example, cuts like bold cardinal ruby (20 str) is a bad cut because long term undercutting has devalued these gems to the point where its almost not even worth cutting. On most servers, cuts like 10mp5, spelldamage/spellpen, and 20 haste are most likely to generate the highest profit. Once you have most of the profitable cuts, you should change your focus to minimizing time investment, and you will be on your way to earning over 20,000 gold per hour.
