Raunchy's Kiting Tips
Kiting; what is it? Basically almost exactly how it sounds -- the process of controlling a mob in such a way that allows you to damage it while you remain out of it's attack range. (Though sometimes kiters don't want to damage their mob
Basic Ranged Technique:
Here is the most basic ranged kiting technique that can used with any (ranged of course) class.
Find the mob you plan on kiting.
Target it and apply any and all slowing/snare/stopping abilities from range.
Once the mob starts moving towards you, keep running forward from where you attacked. Whenever your cooldowns are up, re-apply the abilities.
How to improve this technique:
First, for maximum mana efficiency you will want to use Rank 1 abilities if you are not planning on doing much damage. In addition, make sure you are not running too fast because eventually when you get far enough the mob will return back to its original location (just takes some practice)
Secondly, before you kite, the best thing to do is map out a plot of the path you will be taking (something like MetaMap is excellent for this.) Run through your path a couple times if you can to make sure nothing unexpected will come up.
Finally, to keep a steady pace, practice using your mouse to turn and re-apply abilities mid-jump (if they are instant). This seperates the good from the noobs lol.
Kite Recovery:
Sometimes (esp when you are learning!) you will be too slow applying your abilities etc. and the mob will catch up with you. If the mob hits you and you become dazed, you can either use an aggro dump skill (feign death, vanish etc.) to drop the mob and retry, or throw on a melee snare or in the case of hunters, a trap. It may be helpful to carry a few health pots when you are learning in case you mess up.
Kiting Trees:
Here are some class trees which I have used for kiting with various classes and I found were successful.
Mage - Frost (can dip into Arcane for some mana efficiency talents)
Hunter - Survival (increased trap duration and less resist chance)
Warlock - Affliction (mana efficiency)
Druid - Balance (root talents)
Priest - Discipline (survivability + efficiency)
Shaman - Restoration (only because elemental isn't mana efficient)
