Hello,
This guide is mostly for active young people who want to make the step from casual or no guilds to a pro guild on their server or a different one. Also please don't "kill" me, it's the first time i try to contribute on this forum.
First of all, the actual process of trying to join a guild should be considered as a long term investments. You invest some at start and in time you get your rewards. Depending on person and their expectations, the rewards can be financial (gl0ds), gear (girlfriends come and go, epics are soulbound) or metal (everyone wants to be Nr. 1).
What do we have to invest:
1. We have to invest time first, lots of time. But what for?
a. We need to know who to join, who needs us and what do they have to offer. It is common sense here, we need to know which guild do we want to join, their schedule, their members and member needs, their looting system, their history. All the info can be found on official realm forums and guild websites. After you decide on a guild, visit their website and forums. Check previous applications, see who got accepted and why (feedbacks from member) and who got rejected and why. See what they want from an application. To make it short FIND OUT WHO DO YOU “SELL” YOURSELF TOO
b. We need to look good. The mirror of your history at the moment is the achievements page. This will tell a guild who did you kill, what experience do you have, what do you enjoy doing while playing WoW. An important aspect here is NEVER BE TEMPTED TO LIE! Better impress less with achievements then to tell stories like “I did it on my other character on X realm”. So how can we look good? Easy achievements, try to complete as many easy achievements (kill turkeys, complete instances, heroics, explore, etc). Gear, you need to have everything enchanted and gemed, blue gems. Of course, you will not spend 2k gold on a blue sword, but at least get an useful enchant, have everything enchanted, will help!
c. We need to know the game. Strategy, tactics, theorycraft. Don’t even think about applying or contact anyone from the guild until you : Have the best suited spec, have the best enchants and gems for the spec, know all theorycraft about your class and spec and info about offspecs, know tactics for all encounters. It’s important not to say anything stupid at some point, to prove that you know the game and you want to play it at top level!
d. We need to have the most impressive application possible. This includes full focus on all the questions, good page setup, no dumb emoticons, no stupid jokes, no misspelling. Let me give you an example here. A question like “Spec” should not be answered with “Survival”. The answer should look like “The spec I enjoy playing most and luckily I found most effective at the moment is Survival. Considering the changes made to Beast Mastery spec in patch 2.8, the DPS and class utility of the Survival spec in 10 and 25 men raids overwhelms the pure DPS of the Beas Mastery spec bla bla bla, clas talk. I should add that I am willing to and I will respect in the future if another spec is proved to be better in 10/25 men raids”. An application is not well enough written until you are at least amazed but what you managed to write. In commerce people say that the package sells the product. Well, imagine you are the product and the application is the package!
e. Tell them you are there in the game! NOTE: THIS DOES NOT MEAN TO PESTER ANY MEMBER FROM THE GUILD Try to add officers and GM to your friend list and get to know names from the rest of the members of the guild. Whenever a member of the guild is looking for more for a party, join them if you can. If a member is LFG and you are in a party, invite them. Try to group as much as possible with member of the guild, let them know you. In instances, parties, do your best, impress everyone. User consumables, food, pots, focus. When there are break or funny chatting, add a simple line and make sure the guild member sees it regarding the fact that you applied “Ohh, I have just seen that you are a member of XXXX. I did apply also to your guild yesterday, hopefully I will get invited and get to raid with you again!” Maybe that person will vouch for you. Also very important, as you have an application written to a guild: Don’t stay on alts!
f. Let them know they is what you want. Don’t apply to any other guild meanwhile.
2. We have to invest money. As mentioned before, gear is important, not the most
important, but will pull you down if you don’t correct the mistakes. Have it enchanted and gemed for your spec. If you have some weird item in a spot, let them know why you have it in the application. And most important, never equip the PvP gear while you apply to a PvE gear.
I think there are some more to add to this guide and I am sure it’s not complete but hopefully it will give you the head start over a random player that doesn’t do everything right !
God luck !
