    Spell DPS Profession Guide

Many people knows that many raider choose profession that would give them the best performance, yet there aren't many people who know what to choose, so I created this to make people have easier time to choose their profession.

This list will include only exclusive bonus for each profession only and will not include BoP craftable equipment which usually on par with heroic/raid gear. I'll focus mainly on spell power here since it's the easiest stats to determine. Please tell me if I miss anything.

    -Alchemy
Endless Mana Potion - gives you 400-600 mana every 3 minutes - 13.89mp5 (w/o Alchemist's stone) or 19.44mp5 (with stone)
    Endless Healing Potion - 1680-2160 health every 3 minutes - 53.33hp5 (w/o Alchemist's stone) or 74.67hp5 (with stone)
Some people told me these potion doesn't triggered 'one potion per combat' debuff, some people said it did, can anyone confirm which one is true?

    -Blacksmithing
Socket Bracer - gives you one additional socket to your bracer - 19 spell power
Socket Gloves - gives you one additional socket to your glove - 19 spell power
Total extra spell power for Blacksmithing is 38 spell power

    -Enchanting
    Enchant Ring - Greater Spellpower - 19 spell power x 2 = 38 spell power

    -Engineering
    Hyperspeed Accelerators - 340 haste for 8 sec every 60 sec - 45 haste
    Hand-Mounted Pyro Rocket - 1035-1265 fire damage every 60 sec - 20dps
*note - if you enchant your glove with engineering's enchant, you can't enchant it with enchanting's enchant.
45 haste is equal to about 53 spell power but since you can't have 28 spell power enchant you'll got only 26 more spell power

    -Herbalism
    Lifeblood - Heals 2000 health every 180 seconds - 11.11hp5

    -Inscription
Master's Inscription of the Storm - 61 spell power and 15 critical strike rating to shoulder - 37 more spell power compared to the Sons of Hodir's enchant

    -Jewelcrafting
    Runed Dragon's Eye - 32 spell power - 13 more spell power than runed scarlet ruby x 3 = 39 spell power

    -Leatherworking
Fur Luning - Spell Power - 67 spell power - 37 more spell power than enchanting's enchant

    -Mining
    Toughness - 50 stamina

    -Skinning
Master of Anatomy - 32 critical strike rating
*note - 32 critical strike rating is equal to about 38 spell power

    -Tailoring
    Darkglow Embroidery - 300 mana every 60 seconds - 25mp5
    Lightweave Embroidery - 1000-1200 damage every 45 seconds - about 25dps
*note - internal cooldown and proc rate for both enchants are still remain unknown, numbers come from test which should be close but not yet exactly accurate.

According to these numbers, you'll see that most professions yield the same result. So if you think 3 more spell power is important, you should take Jewelcrafting with Blacksmithing or Enchanting which give you the best bonus ( 77 spell power in total )
*note - I didn't include Alchemy, Herbalism, Mining, Skinning for my conclusion above because I don't think those stats are important for caster, I also didn't include the enchant which deals direct damage from Tailoring and Engineering because it's unable to tell that it's better or worse than other stats.
If think that 3 spell power isn't important, you can just take Leatherworking with Inscription ( 74 spell power ) or whatever you want, it's just 3 spell power less than the best combination.

As I said many times on other posts, information are choices, it's up for you to decide.
In Burning Crusade there are many people who's willing to pay a lot of gold to upgrade their gem for just 2-3 spell power too.

So, if you're troubled with which profession to pick before and you think 3 spell power is important, you can pick the best combination. But if you think 3 spell power is not that important, with this information, you can now see that most professions isn't much different (for you) so you're free to pick whatever you like

Now do the same thing but when Epic Gems come out, then I have heard that Blacksmithing will trump Jewel crafting by about 9 spell Power.

But other than that, thanks, nice guide!

Also to note, this, for a mage, is PVE Fire spec only, since Fire earns the most from crit, while if you are Frost you want haste or damage, same in Arcane, I guess.

With JC you dont need the gems for meta req tho which earns you about 9 spell power

Skinning well give you over +30 crit raiting, you might want to take that into consideration, also you are missing many things.. with JC you can craft your own better gems, which well add up (not sure, would like some confirmation on what I just said)...

To defend myself, if you are a mage, as I was saying, then you still need 2 blue gems of Spell Penetration. The 25 damage + minor run speed is 1 of each color, then you have yellow (loads of Haste), blue (Spell Pen.) and you can go 1 orange for damage/Haste.
Then Blacksmithing is a bit better, but, your choice really.
    (This is Frost-PVP.)

But in PVE, you are probably right, I don't pay attention to PVE.

I already stated in Skinning list that 32 crit rating is equal to about 38 spell power, which is about the same ( If you look at rare gem you'll see that one rare gem gives 19 spell power or 16 crit rating so 32 crit*(19/16)=38 spell power. The reason I give weight to JC more because you can pick any prefix for Dragon's Eye as you want.
Smooth Dragon's Eye gives 27 crit rating which is 11 more than normal rare one, and you can use 3 prismatic gem so it's 33 crit rating, one crit rating more than Skinning. So JC gives 1 more crit and you also can change it to other stat if you want, that's why I give my favor to JC.
And JC own better gems you mentioned is Dragon's Eye and that's the only JC exclusive bonus for now, so you can't get any more bonus spell power from JC than 39 for now.

    Clarification
Dragon's Eye - JC exclusive prismatic gem which can have any prefix you want, matchs any socket except meta and count as three color.
Runed Dragon's Eye gives 32 spell power, Runed Scarlet Ruby gives 19 spell power. As a JC, you'll get 13 more spell power from gem compared to non JC.
But you can only have 3 prismatic gems on you that's why you can only have 39 more.

    Hey man,
    nice summary of the proffesions.
I do currently use Alchemy and I do really enjoy the neverending potion. Saves me some ammount of money but for highest DPS I would recommend Ench+Jwc.

Judge from these numbers, Blizzard is trying to balance every profession bonus equally. I think when epic gems come, JC would get new prismatic gem too.

JC is still best as you can fill in those nasty non-red slots with runed dragonseye, thus getting your meta-requirement (21crit + 3%inc critdmg), + not losing bonuses, + getting about +23dmg average per blue/yellow slot.
