Guide to Hunter Pets: Pet Care, Maintenance, and All around General Happiness
The First thing I'll mention right off the Bat, is To get Tame Beast, Feed Pet and Revive Pet
Pet Taming
Of course the First thing to do is tame a pet, any pet!! So off you go into the vast world and find what you want to tame, within reason. Please, if you are a low level, don't go up to some huge red monster and try to tame it. That is a great way to DIE!! Keep in mind your Tame Pet Skill is a channeling Skill, soo you NEED to watch your HEALTH BAR!! When the channeling is complete, you will have tamed your very first pet!! Congratulations!!!! If you died, well, try again!!
Pet Information
Under your Portrait, is your new Pet Portrait. You can See your Pet's Health, and Mana. Right-click gives you three options:
- Pet Details
- Name Pet (Only usable Once)
- Abandon Pet
Pet Details contains information on the stats of your pet, any resistances she has, her Level, Her mood, her training points, and also her loyalty level towards you, her master.
Name Pet is used to give your pet a name. You can only name your pet ONCE. So choose a name wisely, as your pet will have that name for all eternity!!
Abandon Pet will make your pet leave. Once you hit this and confirm, you can never get your pet back through Call Pet or Revive Pet Skills. You will have to Tame a new Pet.
Pet Moods
There is a small Red icon just after the Health Bar of your Pet. This is a very important Icon to your pet. This is his Mood. Upon first Taming your pet, you will notice this is Red. Red is bad, Red is like the Traffic Light, It's Stop. For your pet, it means your pet doesn't like you.
To make your pet happy, you need to feed your pets. This is done through the Feed Pet Skill, under your Beast Mastery Tab. This will use up a piece of food. Depending on your pet, will depend on what it eats. Right click your pet, and open Pet Details. Run your mouse over the Colour Icon near the top left corner of Pet Details. It will tell you your Pet's Diet. This means you need that item to feed your pet. Some of the items Pets eat are Meat, Cheese, Bread, Fish. You should feed your pet as soon as you tame him.
There are three different Moods for your Pet. The first I mentioned was Red, Red as I said is BAD! The next Mood is Content. Content is Yellow, Yellow is like the Traffic Light, it's Slow!! The last mood is Green. You want to keep your pet 's mood on green. Green is Go!
If you keep your pet's mood on Red, unhappy, your pet will eventually run away. The more you keep him Content or Happy, the longer he will stay, if he ever runs away.
So, why is your Pet's Mood so important? Well, as I stated, for one thing the Happier your Pet is the more likely your pet is to stay with you. I for one don't want to have to keep taming a pet every few hours or so. The mood of your pet also goes towards his Loyalty level towards you. Loyalty is important for your pet, as it goes towards giving him his training points along with the experience he gains from the monsters he helps you to kill. The higher the loyalty level, the happier your pet is with you.
Pet Training
When you go to your Pet Trainer, you are actually learning the skills. Your pet hasn't learned them. You need to teach the skill you just bought to your pet. To do this you use Beast Training This is found in your General Tab. This is where the Training Points Come in. Click on the Skill you wish to teach your pet, and click on the Train Button. Your Pet has now learned the skill.
There are some skills your pet can only learn if you tame other monsters. Take your pet to the Stable Master, and put him in the Stables. This frees you up so you can tame another monster. You can only have one pet at a time.
Tame the monster that has a skill you wish to teach your pet. Once tamed, feed twice to make the new pet happy, and then fight some enemies.
Let's say you want to teach your pet the Claw Ability. If you are a Night Elf, then just tame one of the first sets of Owls, Either Owl Strigid9lvl 1 Claw) or Owl Hunter(lvl 2 Claw). Once you have the Owl tamed, then you need to fight some monsters with the Claw skill. Make sure you use the Claw ability on several enemies. When you have used the skill several times you will see a message appear in your chat window: "You have successfully learned a new Ability: Claw level 1 (or2)" This will appear in yellow. Once you receive the message, you can now abandon the owl if you do not want to keep the owl. Right-click the Owl and choose Abandon. Go back to the Stable Master, and take your pet back out. Use the Beast Training skill to teach your pet the new ability.
NOTE
Not all Pets can learn some of the skills you can get from Taming. For instance, if you have a pet Spider, she cannot learn Claw. If you have an Owl, the Owl cannot learn Bite.
