Alright, so most of this may be common sense to experienced players, but no one likes a noob on their team, so this meant to be a simple (but hopefully helpful) guide for new people trying their hand in Warsong.
Basics: A WSG match consists of a game of "Capture the Flag," where both factions race to capture 3 of the opposing faction's flags. Only one flag per faction is up for grabs at once, but after a capture the flags respawn to their bases.
-Flag Positions: The opposing faction's flag is kept inside the "flag room," located inside the keep opposite of your starting keep.
-Returning a Flag: If your flag is captured, you must kill the opposing faction member carrying the flag (it will be mounted on their back, visible to all players.) Once killed, the flag will be "dropped," (accompanied by a spam in your chat log) in which case, you must right-click your flag to return it to your base. (It will teleport, no running required)
**please note, you must right-click your flag to return it, or another enemy faction member can simply pick it up again**
-Capturing a Flag: A flag capture, a.k.a "cap", occurs when either faction captures the opposing flag, returns it to their flag's base, all while their flag remains uncaptured. In the event that both flags are captured at the same time, either faction must return the flag stolen from them to its base before they can take credit for the flag they had stolen.
Strategies
-Offensive Rush: Simply, all players charge the opposing keep, hoping to force the competition into a submissive, defensive state, rendering them unable to make a flag capture because they are too busy defending their own flag.
-Split: A big mob charges the keep while a few others remain behind to defend their flag. (Can be very ineffective if strength isn't split accordingly; to few defending and it's a waste of effort, too many defending and there may be too little for an offensive attack)
-Defensive Wall: Most players defend the flag while a few try to make a capture (may often be the formation a side takes when the opposing faction has 2/3 flags already)
Basic Character Roles: **Please note that I do realize people may use their characters differently, and that this is merely a guide for people who otherwise wander the midfields**
-Mage: Helpful for defense with their powerful spells, and also conjuring water or food for team members who may have forgotten to bring supplies. Also great for offensive assaults, using Frost Nova to root flag room defenders in place while the offense can make a break with the flag.
-Druids: Good for flag running with their different forms, or otherwise supplying heals to the flag runner
-Hunters: Versatile class, allowing decent offense and also good defense. Concussive shot is useful for both pulling an enemy off of the flag runner, as well as snagging the opposing flag runner (especially useful against Rogue's Sprint.) Keeping your pet on aggro near the flag and/or laying traps around the flag base is also good defensive strategy
-Paladins/Priests: Nearly virtually the same role: good buffs, heals when needed, and shields (Mana shields, blessing of protection, etc.) make them awesome flag runners
-Rogue: Awesome in PvP when used right; useful for flanking the defense. (y'know, that annoying mage that no one targets because he's hanging around behind the frontline) Also a good flag runner; between the speed boost and sprint, the rogue can run nearly 1/2 to 3/4 of the way across the Warsong field.
-Shaman: Decent heals, but totems make for a useful defense.
-Warlocks: DoT's are a useful offensive add-on when stationed behind the frontline offense. Fear can also be very effective when used like a Hunter's Concussive shot
-Warriors: Simply an offensive character; good for the offensive rush and/or flag running when a priest or paladin isn't readily available
Well those are the basics; go out there and give 'em what-for!
(this guide is vastly for characters of the level 19 bracket....as I hope characters in any other bracket are neither noobs nor trying WSG for the first time.....good luck people)
