Basically you want a Mage (ice barrier is sexy here) with several ranks of Arcane Explosion hotkeyed, and a Holy Priest with Holy Nova talented.
1. Group mage, priest and alt.
2. Mage goes off and pulls...for example, in SM Cathedral, I pull the first section, then the second, then Mograine (he pulls the whole Cath). Make sure you are using ice armor, it helps back off some of the damage while pulling by slowing down the mobs over and over. Blinking here and there to get distance is also not only good for the soul, but saves on butt hurt. Additionally, my rogue is an Alchemist, so I use tons of Earthen Elixirs (
Earthen Elixir - Spells - World of Warcraft)... stopping 20 damage may not sound like a lot, but stopping 20 damage per hit x 20 - 30 mobs adds up. I have done it without these potions, they just help your shield last a little longer (as well as your HP), but it is entirely your choice.
3. Run back to the zone... try to find a spot where you can line of sight the mobs, and ice block (this helps ensure that all of the casters are grouped up with the rest of the mobs). Cold Snap is handy here, as well as the frost talent for reducing ice block / ice barrier's cooldowns.
4. Wait until Ice Block has about 1 - 2 seconds left (usually, all of the mobs are rounded up by this time), then tell the Priest to leave the group.
5. Starting spamming Arcane Explosion. I usually target a low HP caster and get them down as close to 5% health as I can using different ranks of AE. Additionally, the Priest can heal you after you do your first explosion with no hit to your alt's xp, and even on a decently geared mage will likely be necessary depending on the number of mobs you pull. Also, having the Priest heal you will ensure that aggro transfers to them when you leave, NOT to your alt.
6. Once the mobs health is as low as you can manage without killing them (preferably in a MAXIMUM of 30 seconds), run, jump, skip and hop to the nearest available exit. If you or your alt is the group leader, toss the Priest an invite at this time, so he can hit it as soon as he is done.
7. Priest then essentially takes over doing what the mage was; killing the mobs off with Holy Nova. The Priest I use has the extended range talent, and a little over 700+ damage, and has no trouble quickly cleaning up the mess. If the Priest used is a little low on damage, you can always use some wizard oil, and maybe a flask of blinding light. In the end, however, the mobs are usually running away by the time the mage leaves (if done right), so as long as the Priest can kill them all in a maximum of ~22 seconds, you should be all good.
8. Priest rejoins, alt picks up loot, everyone is happy.
In ZF this strategy is altered a tad as there is really nowhere efficient and close enough to the zone line to line of sight the pull to gather them up. What I do here is pull on my mount, run back to the zone, stand right at the portal, and throw up Ice Barrier (I don't Ice Block here as the priest and your alt's proximity to the zone line in this area is virtually guaranteed to put one or more of them in combat the instant you get there, and Ice Blocking then would be BAD.) Standard there and let them chew you for a few seconds until all of the casters stop about 30 yards from the zone line. With Ice Barrier you should be able to withstand a few seconds beating, no problem. Now that the casters are there, run all the melee mobs over to the caster mobs... tell your Priest at this point to leave the group. Hit your AE, and have the Priest spam some healage on you.
It takes a little practice, but it isn't too hard and definitely yields great rewards.
I'll probably make a small video tonight showing how I've been doing it to help show it to anyone who is interested, and I'll post it up to help out.
