Just to clarify a bit for the people who seem to be struggling getting XP with the lowbie.

The way me and my friend work it, and have done since stockades is:

70 mage, 70 paladin, lowbie join a group.
Level 70 paladin enters instance with lowbie.
Mage waits outside until asked to come in.
Lowbie waits at the start of the instance while the paladin gathers a group of mobs.
Once paladin has enough mobs (depending on how many you want) aoe them down to around 20%.
Once the mobs are around 20% make sure the paladin is doing no more damage and ask the mage to come inside the instance.
(note, it is vital the paladin does not dps the mobs at all when the mage is about to enter)
As soon as the mage enters the instance, kick the mage from the party.
Mage runs over to the mobs, frost nova's and the paladin must now run out.
The mage now has 60 seconds to aoe the mobs down.
Lowbie takes a hella lot of exp!

Not before 55(outlands) because you need good aoe, wich both hunter and warlock can't provide ( easily interupted, not enough damage).

After 55 in outlands, sure, I bet they can kill 1 mob without dying but might be risky without healer on tougher mobs.

as i said before.. i was trying that in lower instances(namely scarlet monastery), and i could only get xp for the damage i would deal.

what i was doing:

party up with a warr, we both go in the instance, i leave party and tag a mob, warr kills it and i get only xp for the damage i did.

55+ doesnt work, Tried hellfire with mage, hunter and pala. Me as a lowbie, lvl 60. They aggored without doing dmg, i left party, tapped mobs and they finnished them. got 180-300 xp per mob -.-

Were the mobs grey to the level 70's in Hellfire or were they green? I'm pretty sure the idea behind doing it in slave pens is that the mobs are level 62(?) and are green to the level 70's, not grey.

But how do you guys port the lowbie? Do you walk him to the instance? Because the lvl 70s cant use the meeting stone to summon the lowbie.

i just escort the lowbie there. if you're taking a pala with it you have crusader aura + you can heal which gives aggro onto you off any mobs. you may die once or twice but its worth it to get there.
